Gig, resale, survey and AI-task apps pay through a bank deposit, a debit-card transfer, a PayPal balance or a gift card, and the platform decides which you get. On Alignerr, the platform enables only one provider per country, Stripe or PayPal, and it cannot be changed. Faster cash-out can cost money: on DoorDash, Fast Pay costs $1.99 per cash-out in the U.S.
How gig apps pay you: bank, card, PayPal or gift card
Which rail you get decides how fast money arrives and whether you pay to move it.
Bank deposit (ACH)
A bank payout posts after the platform releases the money. DoorDash's weekly direct deposit covers Monday to Sunday and takes 2 to 3 days, usually appearing by Wednesday night. After release, each platform states its own bank time: Airbnb says 3 business days, eBay says 1 to 3 business days after it starts the payout and Impact says 3 to 5 business days. Airbnb charges no fee on ACH.
Debit-card instant transfer
Instant debit-card transfers carry a fee on the platforms that publish one. eBay's express payouts cost a flat $2.00 and typically arrive within 30 minutes. Amazon Flex charges 50 cents to cash out to any debit card, and Airbnb's Fast Pay takes 1.5% of each payout, up to $15.
PayPal balance
PayPal arrival times range from a couple of hours to a few days: Prolific says within 24 hours, Hipcamp says 2 to 4 hours and Ibotta says within 2 hours, up to 1 to 3 business days at busy times. DataAnnotation instead says deposits arrive within a few days of your request, and it needs a PayPal account with the correct email address. Fees can apply: Impact charges 2%, capped at $20, and Clickworker says fees may apply from providers such as PayPal, banks or eWallets.

Some platforms offer one rail and others several, and a few lock the choice by country or account.

Gift card payouts instead of PayPal or cash
Whether you can take a virtual gift card instead of PayPal depends on the platform. Respondent pays study incentives only as a Tremendous gift card that you redeem by email, with no balance and no withdrawal. Swagbucks lets you take rewards as PayPal cash or gift cards. Receipt Hog, one of the cashback and receipt apps, pays by PayPal, Amazon e-gift card or Visa e-gift card.
A gift card doesn't land in your bank account, and a reward card can expire. Wisconsin's consumer agency says reward and promotional gift cards aren't covered by the five-year minimum and can expire anytime, and it describes this as mirroring the federal exemption. That page speaks for Wisconsin, so check your own state's rules. The help pages for Swagbucks and Receipt Hog don't say whether their cards expire or carry fees, so read the card's terms before you redeem. Opening a link in an unexpected message can expose you even without entering information, so a gift-card link you didn't request deserves the same caution.
What to have ready before you earn
Expect to prove who you are and where to send the money before your first deposit. eBay confirms identity, the payout account and business details at registration, and Impact requires verified tax documents, bank account ownership and accurate bank details. PayPal says a bank account must be confirmed before use. Form W-9 is how you give a payer your taxpayer identification number so it can file information returns on income paid to you.
Getting paid: timing, fees and deductions
Three questions come up once money is flowing: when it lands, why the deposit is smaller than the earnings screen, and what a faster option costs.
A deposit that seems late
Veho pays twice per week and takes 2 to 3 business days to process, and Airbnb releases a payout about 24 hours after guest check-in before the bank time starts. Check the platform's release step before calling a deposit late.
A payout smaller than your earnings
Airbnb's payout is the nightly rate plus extras minus the host service fee and co-host shares, and the payout method or Fast Pay can reduce it further. On DoorDash, a cash order's subtotal is deducted from your next payout. Add up the deductions the platform lists before treating a gap as missing money.
Paying a fee to cash out early
Uber Eats couriers can cash out with Instant Pay up to 6 times a day for a fee, or get a weekly automatic bank transfer. That page doesn't state the fee amount, so check the cost before you cash out.
When a payout goes wrong
Holds, minimums and failed payouts each have causes the platforms document on their own pages.
A first payout that is held
A new payout method or changed bank details can pause the first payout: eBay says up to 48 hours for a new method, and Impact holds payments for 48 hours after a bank change.
Earnings stuck below a minimum
Money below a platform's minimum stays in your balance until you reach it: Survey Junkie's minimum is $5, and Ibotta needs $20 for a bank withdrawal. Impact also won't release payouts until your tax document is submitted and approved.
A payout that never arrives
A mismatch in your details can stop a payout. Impact says the bank beneficiary name must match the submitted tax document or you won't be paid, and eBay says payouts can be held if registration details don't match.
Payout red flags that apply on every platform
The FTC's rule covers every rail: anyone pressuring you to pay or give personal information to get money is a scammer. These checks catch the rest:
Checklist
Never pay anything to get hired or paid
The FTC says honest employers never ask you to pay to get a job. A request for payment is a warning sign.
Never send back part of a check
The FTC says honest employers never send a check and then tell you to send back part of the money.
Distrust unexpected links to update payment details
Legitimate companies won't unexpectedly send a link to update payment or account info. Contact them through a known site or number.
Refuse any demand to pay by gift card
The FTC says anyone who demands payment by gift card is a scammer.
Verify requests for personal or financial information yourself
Honest organizations won't contact you to ask for it. Check through a website or phone number you already know.
If you paid a scammer with gift cards, report it to the issuer and the FTC. How to spot side-hustle scams goes through the scams aimed at gig workers, sellers and survey takers.
Guides for each payout problem
Each of these payout problems has its own guide, with the platforms' rules side by side.
Frequently asked questions
It depends on the platform. eBay sellers change the bank account in the Payments tab of Seller Hub, and Prolific lets you edit the PayPal email under Account, then Payment method. Alignerr says its payment provider is set by country and cannot be changed, so check the platform's payout page before relying on a switch.
Some do. DataAnnotation pays through PayPal and requires you to have a PayPal account. Mindrift pays through Payoneer or Tipalti (PayPal), chosen by withdrawal method. Alignerr names Stripe Connect and PayPal as its payment partners, and its process page doesn't say which one applies to U.S. workers.
