BLS reports a median of $19.88 an hour for employed data entry keyers. That is a nearby occupation, used here only as a benchmark, and it excludes self-employed workers. Platforms advertise $15-30 an hour at entry level on Mindrift and projects starting at $25-$50 an hour on DataAnnotation. Those are provider claims for active work. Mindrift doesn't publish a platform fee, and none of these sources says what the rates come to after assessments and waiting.

The main catch is getting in. DataAnnotation requires a Starter Assessment, and it says passing doesn't guarantee work and there is no minimum number of hours.

How annotation pay is set

Clickworker says it has no hourly rate and pays per job or microtask, based on completion time, difficulty, required qualification and expenses. Mindrift pays per completed task and shows the amount before you start. On CrowdGen, pay is tied to submitted hours or units, and contributors self-report hours on some projects. CrowdGen's homepage lists up to $95/hr for linguists, a provider maximum for one specialist domain, not typical pay.

Mindrift lists writing prompts, evaluating AI responses and creating training data across STEM, coding, legal and consulting projects.

Where the hours go

Unpaid time comes before the first task. DataAnnotation's general assessment takes about an hour. Outlier describes 30 to 90 minutes of general onboarding plus project assessment tasks before paid tasking. Mindrift's application involves a CV and an assessment. After that, Outlier says available projects vary and may not match your field. The calculator's unpaid-time figure is an assumption, so change it to match your own experience.

First pay combines each platform's approval time and payout delay. Bank transfers can add a few days, depending on your bank and payout method. Full terms are on each platform's page. Checked Oct 27, 2026; confirm on the official page before you sign up.

Mindrift's eligibility page doesn't list the U.S. as restricted. Clickworker lists ACH payouts in the USA. More platforms are profiled under microtasks and AI work, including DataAnnotation, Outlier, Alignerr and Mindrift. Work focused on rating AI answers is covered in Rating AI responses.

Requirements and rules in the U.S.

DataAnnotation asks for a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience for generalist work, plus reliable internet. Outlier requires legal working age and a visa that permits work without sponsorship. Clickworker requires an SSN and a signed W-9 from U.S. workers. Outlier classifies workers as independent contractors, and its terms say workers assume classification liability and must indemnify the company.

The IRS says independent contractors are self-employed and owe self-employment tax on net earnings of $400 or more, with half of that tax deductible. Gig income is taxable even without a 1099. Equipment and internet deductions follow the publications listed on the IRS's gig work tax page.

Risks and red flags

Platforms can end access quickly. Outlier's terms say it may terminate accounts or remove task listings immediately without prior notice, for any reason. It pays final payment for completed tasks, but account information can't be retrieved afterward. DataAnnotation says work depends on demand and past performance, and poor work can lead to loss of project access. Clickworker deducts rejected jobs from your balance.

Who data annotation fits, and who should skip it

It fits you if:

  • You can work in bursts. Mindrift says it is project-based, with no contract or fixed hours.
  • You have coding skills or a professional field. Mindrift claims $60-100+ an hour for domain experts.
  • You can pass a qualification test. TELUS Digital's U.S. Rater posting asks for a language assessment, an open-book qualification exam and ID verification.
  • You want work that overlaps with rating AI responses, which often runs on the same platforms.

Skip it if:

  • You need money within days. Clickworker says completed jobs take 7 to 30 days to become payable (39 days for UHRS jobs), and a weekly bill run follows.
  • You have no degree or specialist field and want the higher advertised rates. Mindrift says 70% of its contributors hold a Master's or PhD.
  • You'd rather avoid assessments and ID checks. Compare paid online surveys and get-paid-to sites.

How to start

  1. Pick a platform with open sign-up. Apply on Mindrift with a CV and assessment, or create a profile on CrowdGen, where most projects need a qualification process.
  2. Gather documents first. DataAnnotation needs a government photo ID and selfie through Persona, plus a PayPal account. Clickworker needs an SSN and signed W-9.
  3. Take DataAnnotation's Starter Assessment only when you have an uninterrupted hour. It can be taken once.
  4. Log every hour, including tests and waiting, and use the hourly earnings guide to see your real rate.
  5. Set money aside for self-employment tax using the IRS's gig work tax page.
  6. Before replying to any text or message about a job, read the FTC's task scam alert.
