Is Prolific worth it for research study and survey participants?
Prolific says its rewards are cash, not gift cards, and new U.S. participants join through a waitlist.
Prolific makes sense if
You'd rather be paid in cash than gift cards
Choose another platform if
You want to start earning this week
You need money within a few days of finishing a study
You need studies on a set schedule
You can't risk losing access without an explanation
You work slowly through tasks
How much Prolific takes from your pay
Prolific says the researcher sets the reward and pays Prolific's platform fee on top of it, so you receive the full reward. The fee also applies to bonuses, and you receive those in full too.
Prolific fees
- Prolific keeps
Researchers pay the platform fee on top of participant rewards.
- Customers pay on top
Researchers pay the platform fee
The fee also applies to bonuses, which you receive in full.
How and when Prolific pays you
Earnings sit as pending until a researcher approves them, and only then can you cash out to PayPal.
How Prolific pays
Service completed
- Payment holds
72-hour wait after PayPal change
Applies if your PayPal address recently changed or you have under four cash-outs.
Joining Prolific, step by step
Join waitlist
New U.S. participants sign up via a waitlist and are invited when tasks are available.
Wait for invite
Invites range from hours to months or longer, with no queue position.
Identity check and practice task
After the invite, Prolific says verification and a practice task take about 15 minutes.
Hyperwallet account
You acknowledge creating a Hyperwallet account, which handles PayPal payouts.
Researcher approval
Pending earnings become available once a researcher approves, up to 22 days.
Cash out to PayPal
Payouts arrive within 24 hours of cash-out, typically sooner.
If a researcher doesn't review a submission in time, Prolific auto-approves it after 22 days. Balance still awaiting approval can't be cashed out, and cash-outs are limited to once per 24 hours.
Prolific requirements and how long approval takes
Identity verification decides whether you get an account. Prolific says that failed verification means no participant account and no rejoining with a new one.
Prolific requirements
- Where you can work
United States (most OECD countries)
Eligibility is based on where you live, not your nationality.
- ID and documents
Documents are stored by Onfido, which shares only name, birth date and ID country.
Valid US license, state ID or passport
The ID must be valid and from your country of residence.
- Device
Photocopies and screenshots aren't accepted, but you can borrow a phone.
- Also required
No VPN, proxy or Private Relay
Detection places an automatic hold on your account.
Prolific bans duplicate accounts.
One person per household per study
Multiple accounts per household are allowed, one person per study.
Failed verification means no account, and you can't rejoin with a new one.
Approval has two stages. First comes the waitlist. Prolific says invites aren't first come first served, no account exists until you're invited, and your position can't be checked because it isn't a queue. Prolific publishes no wait time. Then comes verification with a document photo and a selfie video.
How much you can make on Prolific
Prolific publishes pay floors and one study-reward average. It doesn't publish what participants earn in a month.
Earnings figures
The floors are what researchers must or should pay per hour of study. Prolific computes the effective rate from median actual completion time, so a study that runs long can become underpaying, and Prolific then requires bonus top-ups. Bonuses don't count toward the minimum. The average is Prolific's own claim for 2023, and it is a rate per hour of study time, not per hour spent looking for studies. No independent source with a stated sample measures typical participant earnings or study availability.
Prolific says how many studies you see depends on researcher demand that varies over time and by region, places can fill within seconds, and it can't guarantee studies on any given day. Unpaid waiting belongs in your math: see how to calculate your actual hourly earnings. Screened-out participants should be compensated based on time spent, per Prolific's participant page, which gives no figure.
Can Prolific deactivate your account?
Yes. Prolific can place an account on hold, and it doesn't give the specific reason. Its listed causes include VPN use during a study, multiple or shared accounts, a high number of rejected submissions, failed identity checks and LLM or automation use. Prolific says participants shouldn't use VPNs, iCloud Private Relay or proxies, which can cause flags, hide studies or block cash-out. Separately, mismatches between your ID and your reported details lead to a permanent ban. Money already in a held account can still be cashed out, even below the usual minimum.
You appeal through the support chatbot or by replying to the on-hold email. Decisions can take up to 4 weeks, and Prolific says a denied appeal is final.
Rejections and time-outs affect pay. Researchers can reject for finishing too fast or failing attention checks. For a speed rejection, you message the researcher first, then Prolific Support after seven days with no reply. A rejection carries no payment, and multiple rejections can affect account status. Timed-out submissions are usually unpaid, though payment is at the researcher's discretion and your standing isn't affected. After a technical problem, you aren't paid for waiting time and should return the study right away. Prolific doesn't compensate for technical issues itself, and returning the study doesn't affect your score.
For an underpaid study, use the Report study button. If no adjustment payment arrives within 22 days, message Prolific through the chatbot.
Is Prolific legit?
Prolific classes participants as independent contractors and says it acts as a commercial agent between researchers and participants.

Taxes on Prolific income
Prolific says participants are independent contractors responsible for their own taxes. It says rewards may be taxable income and tells you to keep your own income records. Instead of a tax form, it points to a downloadable submission history with the reward for each submission. Prolific says it doesn't issue 1099 forms itself; cash-outs through PayPal are included on PayPal's 1099-K, and all earnings count as income whether or not a form arrives.
