Is Swappa worth it for used phone and electronics sellers?

Swappa lists for free and takes 3% only when an item sells. Whether that suits you depends on how fast you need the money, who pays when a sale goes wrong, and whether you can ship.

How much Swappa takes from your pay

Swappa's fees page says listing is free and sellers pay 3% of the sold price. Buyers pay their own 3% fee, added to the listing price, so the price a buyer sees is higher than the ask price you set. PayPal or Stripe then charge processing fees on the payment total, and Swappa's fees page says these are separate from its fee. Swappa also says it collects marketplace facilitator sales tax in specific states, based on the buyer's shipping address, and that PayPal no longer refunds its seller fee when you issue a refund.

On Swappa's own example, a $100 ask price means a $3 fee to Swappa and $97 to you, before payment processing: 3.49% plus $0.49 through PayPal, or 2.9% plus $0.30 through Stripe. What you paid for the phone and your shipping cost still come off the result.

This is an example, not a prediction. Defaults: price from the $100 ask price in Swappa's own fee example; unpaid time is yours to add (Swappa publishes no listing, review or shipping time); costs: what you paid for the phone and shipping, yours to add; PayPal's 3.49% + $0.49 is charged on top of Swappa's fee; 10 sales a week is a starting point, not a typical workload.

How and when Swappa pays you

Swappa says it pays sellers at the time of sale through PayPal, or Stripe for select sellers, with no platform escrow or wallet. Any wait comes from PayPal: it says a new seller's initial payments can be held, and it reviews seller accounts monthly to release proceeds sooner. Swappa says new accounts may be held until a first sale goes smoothly, and doesn't state how long. Swappa doesn't publish a minimum payout.

Swappa says staff review listings before they go live, nearly all of them by hand, and moderators sometimes ask for extra photos. Swappa doesn't publish a review time in days.

How much you can make on Swappa

Swappa publishes no average seller income, and no one measures what a typical Swappa seller earns. The only seller-side total is Swappa's own claim for 2018, which covers the whole platform. The Thrifle figures are measured, but they describe sale prices, not what a seller keeps.

Swappa's blog gives two different ranges for how much the outgoing iPhone's used and trade-in price falls around a new launch: 9 to 15% within 24 to 48 hours of an announcement and around 20% after shipping in one post, and 15 to 25% below pre-announcement prices in another. Neither post states a method. For the September 2026 iPhone 18 Pro launch, Swappa says prices did not fall the usual way because Apple raised carryover iPhone prices by $100 the same day. Thrifle is a commercial resale-data publisher that worked from Internet Archive captures of Swappa price pages, so its analysis is not peer-reviewed. Swappa publishes no median time to sell. Can Swappa suspend your account?

Swappa's Terms (Aug 2022 version) list suspected policy breaches, inability to verify personal information, and fraudulent activity or actions that could cause financial loss as grounds for suspension or termination. A Swappa blog post from Sep 2026 adds fake accounts, repeated problems after warnings and abusive behavior. It names creating a new account to dodge a hold and reversing a payment through your bank without permission. It says Swappa may use warnings or temporary holds while an issue is open.

The Terms contain no appeal process and say Swappa has no obligation to resolve user disputes, though it may help at its discretion. Support is the route: Swappa says it is open 24/7 with a typical response around 20 minutes, which is its own claim.

Returns also affect your standing. When a buyer says an item is not as described, they first comment on the sale page with a proposed fix and photos, and you have up to 24 hours to reply. If you don't answer within one business day, the buyer can escalate to Swappa support. Swappa says you pay return shipping when an item was not as advertised, the item comes back to you, and you must refund promptly and reimburse the shipping to stay in good standing. Swappa counts activation-locked or iCloud-locked devices as not as described, and says PayPal's protection can produce a refund whether or not you agree.

Is Swappa legit?

Swappa's Terms name Swappa, LLC as the operator, with a Kansas City, Missouri address. They say Missouri law governs and disputes go to Platte County or the Western District of Missouri courts. Swappa says Ben Edwards founded it and launched it in December 2010, and its About page lists him as Founder and CEO. The Terms also describe Swappa as a venue that is not directly involved in transactions and does not control item quality.
