Is Amazon Associates worth it for affiliate marketers, bloggers and content creators?
On Apr 14, 2026, Amazon added a 180-day limit on qualifying purchases and disqualified sales from paid or boosted ads, so what counts as a commissionable sale is narrower than it was. Your category, traffic source and tolerance for account risk decide the fit.
Amazon Associates makes sense if
Your content sits in a higher-paying category
Choose another platform if
You plan to drive traffic with paid or boosted ads
You need rates you can plan around
You can't risk losing the account overnight
You want to talk publicly about your Associates participation
What does Amazon Associates cost and what does it pay per sale?
Joining is free, and Amazon's program policies say it has never authorized any business to sell paid set-up or consulting services. After three years with no commission income, Amazon may charge a dormancy fee of $10 or your unpaid commissions, whichever is less. Amazon pays a percentage of qualifying revenue, set by product category, plus a flat bounty for Prime sign-ups.

- Amazon Associates keeps
Amazon may charge the lesser of $10 or unpaid commissions after 3 years with no commission income.
How and when Amazon Associates pays you
Amazon says commission is earned after the order ships, not at the click, and its example pays January earnings in late March. Amazon says balances below the minimum roll over.

Amazon Associates requirements and how long approval takes
Amazon requires three qualifying sales within 180 days of applying, and personal orders don't count. Amazon says it can withdraw the application if you don't refer enough qualifying sales in that window, and it doesn't reassess a rejected application. After the third sale it says it evaluates the application within a day or two. Amazon decides suitability at its sole discretion. Amazon's U.S. sign-up page is open, with no waitlist.

These are posted rates and Amazon's own claims, not results. "Up to 10%" is Amazon's marketing claim. Amazon says tens of thousands of creators, publishers and bloggers are earning but gives no average or median, and its agreement makes no promise about traffic or commission income. No independent study with a stated sample measures what Associates earn.
Rates and rules have also moved. Amazon says that on Apr 14, 2026 it added the 180-day limit, disqualified purchases from customers referred through paid or boosted ads (with limited exceptions) and limited onsite commission to the same ASIN variant. On May 19, 2026, Adweek via eMarketer reported that Amazon cut commissions by up to 50% for some publishers without announcing it, that the cuts were not applied across the board, and that milestone incentive tiers were removed for most publishers. A Flywheel Digital analysis from May 2025 found earlier category cuts between 2019 and 2025, such as Furniture and Home falling from 8%-6% to 3%. Amazon's rate table carries no date or change log, so check it before you plan around a number.
Can Amazon Associates close your account?
Yes. Amazon's Operating Agreement says it can suspend or terminate immediately for several reasons, including concerns about its brand reputation. If you violate the agreement, it may stop paying commissions permanently without notice, and after termination it may hold accrued unpaid commissions for a reasonable period to account for cancellations and returns. It may also terminate if it previously terminated you or an affiliated person, and it treats any violation of the disclosure section as a material breach. You must give Amazon information it requests to verify compliance. The agreement describes no appeal process. Amazon says it doesn't reassess a rejected application, and rejected accounts and IDs can't be reinstated.
Is Amazon Associates legit?
The U.S. program is run by Amazon.com Services LLC under an Operating Agreement last updated Oct 15, 2025. The record below concerns Amazon's parent company, not the Associates program: the FTC alleged Amazon enrolled consumers in Prime without consent and made cancellation hard, and the case ended in a settlement.

Scams that use Amazon Associates' name
Amazon's program policies warn about businesses offering costly set-up or consulting services, including ones using the Amazon name. Amazon's scam page adds what it says it never does:

Taxes on Amazon Associates income
Amazon says it issues a 1099 by Jan 29 to Associates paid $600 or more, and that corporations and LLCs taxed as C or S corporations generally don't receive one. Your tax interview must be validated by the IRS before commissions are paid, and the tax ID can be an SSN, ITIN or EIN.

Amazon Associates questions
Amazon's help page says you earn commission on qualifying items a customer adds to the cart within 24 hours of arriving through your link. The window closes when the customer submits an order or comes back through another Associate's link, and a return through your own link opens a new window. An item added within the window still earns commission if it is ordered before the cart expires, usually after 90 days. Amazon's Program Policies, updated Apr 14, 2026, define a session as ending at the first of 24 hours from the click, a non-digital order or a click through another Associate's link.
Amazon requires this statement: "As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases." Its agreement bars public communication about the program beyond that disclosure without Amazon's permission, and bars misrepresenting your relationship with Amazon. The FTC says a material connection, including a financial relationship, must be made obvious in endorsements.
