Is HopSkipDrive worth it for CareDrivers?

HopSkipDrive suits you if you have caregiving experience and want to claim pre-scheduled rides yourself. For the wider picture, see kid transport driving.

How much HopSkipDrive takes from your pay

HopSkipDrive doesn't publish a commission or take rate, so you can't work out a percentage cut. Its pricing terms describe your pay per ride as a starting fare plus estimated mileage and actual time. The driver page adds that longer or more time-consuming trips pay extra and some rides carry additional earnings. No separate fuel reimbursement is stated, and you drive your own car. HopSkipDrive also doesn't publish what background checks, fingerprinting or the vehicle inspection cost.

It says requirements may vary by location, and in some markets the child abuse and neglect scan can happen after activation. Top per-ride pay in recruiter listing

    Copilot Careers

The Copilot Careers listing for Colorado advertises up to $50 per ride plus a $500 Welcome Guarantee. That is a recruiter's marketing claim, and HopSkipDrive's current driver page mentions no dollar amount and no Welcome Guarantee. CBS Colorado reported in 2025 that drivers can get incentives and bonuses based on rides.

Volume is the bigger unknown. Rides are pre-scheduled and you claim them yourself, and HopSkipDrive's driver page doesn't promise ride volume. Its help center says there are generally fewer rides to claim in summer when schools are closed and many more once school restarts, although CBS Colorado reported that summer programs in Colorado still generate rides. In 2024 HopSkipDrive said its ride volume rose more than 300% from the start to the end of the school year. That is company demand, not pay per driver. Nobody publishes hours or rides per driver.

Can HopSkipDrive deactivate your account?

Yes. HopSkipDrive's Terms of Use say it can deactivate you immediately if you no longer qualify or for safety reasons, with notice and an opportunity to cure. Your driving record is monitored after certification, so a new infraction can affect your status. The stated conduct rules are zero tolerance for drugs or alcohol while driving, discrimination, touching and cell phone use.

Insurance depends partly on you. HopSkipDrive carries $1 million per accident in third-party liability coverage on rides, but its help center says you must carry your own auto liability insurance at state minimums, and that failing to keep collision and comprehensive coverage on your personal policy can lead to a denied claim. Its driver disclosures add that your personal policy may not cover rideshare use, and that you are responsible for telling your insurer.

Is HopSkipDrive legit?

HopSkipDrive describes itself as a technology company co-founded by CEO Joanna McFarland, and it says it is licensed as a Transportation Network Company. Its Terms of Use (dated Feb 22, 2023) describe CareDrivers as independent contractors and include an arbitration agreement governed by the Federal Arbitration Act, falling back to Delaware law.

The court record shows one data-breach class action. It made allegations, and a settlement was agreed. It is not a finding of wrongdoing, and no admission is reported.

Taxes on HopSkipDrive income

HopSkipDrive doesn't publish which tax form it issues to CareDrivers. The IRS says gig income is taxable even if you don't receive a 1099-K, 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC. The IRS also says the 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC reporting threshold rose to $2,000 for payments made after 2025, a rule for payers generally and not specific to HopSkipDrive.
