Is Uber worth it for rideshare drivers?

Uber publishes no fixed cut of the fare, so what you keep depends on the trip and the week. Your age, your car, how soon you need cash and your driving record decide whether it fits. For how the work compares with other apps, see rideshare driving.

How much Uber takes from your pay

Uber doesn't publish a percentage. It says it keeps the difference between what the rider pays and what you earn, and that the share changes each trip and week. Uber also says part of the rider's fare goes to commercial auto insurance and operating costs. Under Upfront Fares, Uber no longer posts set per-mile or per-minute rates for drivers, and it says you typically earn the fare shown up front even if the route is shorter. Your Earnings Hub weekly fare breakdown shows how much of the week's fares went to you, to Uber, and to costs such as insurance and government fees.

Promotions are conditional. Uber describes Quest as a bonus you opt into in the app and earn only by completing a set number of trips in a set time. It describes Boost+ as tied to trips starting in a certain area within a time window, offered occasionally and open only if you are eligible and signed up.

How and when Uber pays you

Unless you request Instant Pay, Uber deposits your earnings automatically once a week. Instant Pay trades a fee for speed, and Uber says the fee varies by market and is shown in the app. Uber doesn't publish a minimum payout.

  1. Upload documents

  2. Background screening

Checkr runs the free check after you consent and give your SSN and license.

  3. Screening before first trip

Uber screens all drivers before their first trip and rescreens at least yearly.

Uber requirements and how long approval takes

Uber's requirements page and its main drive page word the age rule differently. The requirements page gives a specific minimum for new drivers, while the main page refers only to your city's minimum. Uber says vehicle requirements vary by region and appear during sign-up, so your city's answer shows only in the sign-up flow.

Uber says every driver is screened before the first trip and rescreened at least yearly outside New York City. Checkr runs most checks, and Uber's help pages name other screening companies too. Uber's driver page says it operates in hundreds of cities worldwide and points you to a city list. It gives no per-city statement on whether sign-ups are open right now.

How much you can make on Uber

Uber's driver earnings page says it doesn't promise earnings and that earnings structures differ by city. It gives no national hourly or monthly figure, so the published estimates come from a study of three cities.

Earnings figures

Per hour

  • $12.95

Berkeley re-estimate of net hourly pay

    UC Berkeley IRLE

The two rows describe the same three cities and disagree. UC Berkeley's labor research center re-analyzed Uber-supplied data and said HR&A's estimate overstated net hourly earnings by $9.09, or 70 percent. Berkeley calls its work a re-analysis of Uber's data, not an independent sample of drivers, and notes that tips are included in the earnings definition even though minimum wage policies exclude tips. Neither figure tells you what you would earn in your city. Your own Earnings Hub shows your weekly earnings and hours, and the hourly earnings guide shows how to add unpaid time and costs.

Can Uber deactivate your account?

Yes. Uber says the most common reasons are expired documents and failed Real-Time ID Checks, including letting someone else take the photo. Account sharing isn't allowed in the U.S. Uber's deactivation page also lists these grounds:

  • A rating below your city's minimum, based on an average of your last 500 rider ratings.
  • Crash or citation reports, repeated unsafe driving reports, and phone sensor data showing serious violations such as high speeding.
  • Impairment or drowsy driving reports.
  • Fraud, such as inflating trip time or distance, duplicate accounts or false cleaning fees.
  • Unapproved vehicles or failing to maintain vehicle safety.
  • Discrimination, including refusing service animals or wheelchairs.

Uber's community guidelines, dated Aug 11, 2025, add that dangerous driving reports can cost access even if no law was broken.

Uber says it may remove access without advance notice for legal or safety reasons. In most cases you can request a review in the in-app Review Center and add evidence such as audio or video, but not every decision is open to review. Uber says smells left by riders can be read as impairment and lead to legally required temporary holds. If you face permanent deactivation for drug-impaired driving, Uber says it offers a drug test at its expense. For the most serious safety incidents, Uber shares account information with other companies through the Industry Sharing Safety Program.

Offline, Uber says your personal insurance applies and its coverage does not. Uber also says it doesn't maintain uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage for rideshare in every state.

Is Uber legit?

Uber is run by Uber Technologies, Inc., a Delaware corporation that files annual reports with the SEC. Its fiscal 2025 10-K lists driver reclassification as a headline risk factor. Most of the public record concerns how drivers are paid and classified, and each entry below is reported as the record states it.

Scams that use Uber's name

Uber has warned drivers about fake texts that impersonate it. A Motor1 report describes a phone version.

More warning signs are in how to spot side-hustle scams.

Taxes on Uber income

Drivers are self-employed for tax purposes. The IRS says self-employment tax generally applies once net self-employment earnings reach $400.

Uber vs other rideshare and gig driving apps

Lyft is the other main rideshare app. Uber Eats and DoorDash pay for delivery rather than rides, and Uber says Uber Eats couriers on a bike or on foot can start at 18.

When you get paid is when each platform pays out. Bank transfers can add a few days, depending on your bank and payout method.
