Amazon Associates' application review requires 3 qualifying sales within 180 days, and your own orders don't count. Amazon then pays about 60 days after the end of the month, and only once your balance reaches the minimum payout threshold ($10 for direct deposit or gift certificate, $100 for check).

The FTC says no one can promise business income.

Income depends on an audience you build first, such as a website, social account or app. It suits people who already publish content and can wait for payouts.

How affiliate commissions work

Merchants pay a commission on qualifying purchases from people you referred. Amazon added a 180-day limit for qualifying purchases effective April 14, 2026, and now disqualifies purchases from customers referred through any paid or boosted ad, with limited exceptions.

Walmart's terms say rates appear only in the Impact portal and can change without notice, and that purchases driven by organic search earn no commission. Amazon can also change its terms unilaterally.

What affiliates actually earn

The only published figures are commission rates, which show what a merchant pays per sale, not what affiliates earn.

Where the hours go

Walmart's terms base commission on the sale price of completed purchases. Time spent writing, filming or building an audience before a sale earns nothing from the program.

First pay combines each platform's approval time and payout delay. Bank transfers can add a few days, depending on your bank and payout method. Full terms are on each platform's page. Checked Oct 27, 2026; confirm on the official page before you sign up.

Walmart runs its program on Impact Radius, so joining Impact is part of applying. Awin asks new publishers for a refundable deposit, so treat any other upfront fee to join a program as a warning sign.

Disclosure and tax rules in the U.S.

Amazon requires a specific statement: "As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases." The same agreement bars public communication about the program beyond that disclosure without permission. The FTC says a financial relationship is a material connection that must be obvious, and that a disclosure mixed in with hashtags or links is not acceptable. Walmart says applicants should not link to Walmart before approval.

The IRS says side income must be reported even without a 1099. Self-employment tax applies at $400 of net earnings, and the self-employed generally owe quarterly estimated payments.

Risks and red flags

Amazon may stop paying commissions permanently, without notice, if you violate the agreement, and it can suspend or terminate immediately for reasons including brand reputation. Walmart's terms let either party terminate immediately with or without cause.

Who affiliate marketing fits, and who should skip it

Fits you if:

  • You already publish a website, video channel, social account or app, and links would sit in content you make anyway.
  • You can recommend products you have used. The FTC says an endorsement must reflect honest experience.
  • You can wait for slow payouts: Walmart's terms say about 90 days, and Amazon pays about 60 days after month end.
  • You'd rather earn commission on other companies' products than hold stock, as in retail arbitrage.

Skip it if:

How to start

  1. Pick a channel you control. Amazon accepts a website, social media content, app or Alexa skill.
  2. Read Amazon's Operating Agreement, including its limits on public communication and paid ads.
  3. Publish public content before applying. Amazon's application review page gives about 10 posts as a rule of thumb.
  4. Add the required disclosure near every link, not buried among hashtags.
  5. Apply to Amazon Associates and aim for 3 qualifying sales within 180 days. Check Amazon's payment page for the tax information needed to get paid.
  6. For Walmart, apply through its affiliate terms and Impact portal and wait for approval before linking.
  7. Set aside part of each payment for tax using the IRS self-employed tax center.
