Is DoorDash worth it for delivery drivers (Dashers)?
DoorDash's sign-up page takes U.S. applications. What you earn depends heavily on your city, because a few cities set their own pay floors.
DoorDash makes sense if
You deliver in New York City
You want injury cover with no premium while dashing
Choose another platform if
You need cover while the app is off
You expect DoorDash to cover your own car
You need a guaranteed amount of work
How much DoorDash takes from your pay
DoorDash publishes no percentage commission. It sets base pay per offer, then adds promotions and tips. DoorDash says base pay doesn't change with the tip, so $6 base plus a $5 tip pays $11, and that the amount on the acceptance screen is a minimum, so the total may be greater. It doesn't publish what it keeps per order, so you can't work out a take rate from its pages.

How and when DoorDash pays you

How much you can make on DoorDash
DoorDash publishes no national average for Dashers, and says there is no minimum hours requirement. For New York City, DoorDash says average pay per active hour before tips is roughly $30, which counts only time on a delivery. Gridwise, a commercial earnings-tracking app, reports $12.43 gross per active hour in 2025 from its users.
Earnings figures
DoorDash's $22.13 NYC minimum comes from a March 2024 help page that says it updates each April 1, so it may be out of date. Gridwise's $12.43 is gross, excludes waiting time and expenses, and comes from self-selected app users with no stated sample size. The Seattle figure is city-specific. No figure here is a nationwide, DoorDash-only, after-expenses number, and none is a monthly total.
Can DoorDash deactivate your account?
DoorDash's access policy names unsafe conduct (violence, impairment, harassment, unsafe driving) and fraud or abuse (multiple accounts, GPS spoofing, account sharing) as grounds for deactivation. Its agreement treats lapsed insurance as a material breach, lets DoorDash withhold pay if it reasonably believes a Dasher defrauded or abused the platform, and guarantees no volume of work.
Deactivated Dashers get an email with the reason, and most appeals are filed in the app. DoorDash's appeal page gives up to one year, but 90 days in Seattle. A denied appeal can be refiled after 90 days if eligible. DoorDash doesn't publish appeal outcome rates or a decision timeframe.
DoorDash says its liability coverage of up to $1,000,000 applies only during active delivery and doesn't cover your own vehicle. Its accident policy excludes vehicle damage and injuries while delivering for another platform, and DoorDash warns that many personal auto policies may deny delivery claims. Under the agreement, Dashers aren't eligible for workers' compensation through DoorDash unless the law requires it.
Is DoorDash legit?
DoorDash, Inc. is a public company listed on Nasdaq, and its fiscal 2025 annual report lists Dasher reclassification as a material risk factor. In NYC, the city said its investigation found DoorDash paid workers below the minimum rate or not at all. DoorDash's own statement acknowledges that some NYC Dashers were underpaid or paid late, and says $12.3 million covers them, with the rest resolving a disagreement over pay for online time between deliveries. The city says payments begin in fall 2026 and no claim is needed. Two attorney general cases concerned DoorDash using customer tips to make up the pay it promised drivers. In Illinois the settlement covered more than 79,000 workers for July 2017 to September 2019, and DoorDash ended the practice in 2019. In New York, the attorney general announced a $16.75 million settlement in February 2025.

Scams that use DoorDash's name
DoorDash says no one from DoorDash will ever ask for your password or security code. Its account-protection article describes these patterns, each aimed at getting your Dasher login:
If you shared a password, DoorDash says to change it and check your bank account and Fast Pay card in the Earnings tab. For fake recruiters, the FTC says honest employers never ask you to pay to get a job, and none sends a check to deposit and then asks you to send part back. See how to spot side-hustle scams.
Taxes on DoorDash income
DoorDash says it issues a Form 1099-NEC at $600 or more, delivered through the app, and withholds no taxes. The form doesn't split base pay from tips; DoorDash says it emails tip income separately by Jan 31.
