Is RVshare worth it for RV owners who rent out their rigs?

RVshare says listing is free and its base protection plan has no premiums for owners. Its owner FAQ doesn't state the commission percentage. For how the idea works overall, see renting out your RV.

How much RVshare takes from your pay

RVshare's owner FAQ says it charges a commission only when a rental books, taken as a share of the rental price and booking fees, excluding tax. The FAQ doesn't state the percentage, so confirm the rate with RVshare before you set a nightly price. Renters pay on top: RVshare's terms say a Screening Fee is mandatory and non-refundable on every booking, and they state no amount.

RVshare requirements and how long approval takes

RVshare says every owner and renter completes ID verification and screening, and that this is usually instant. When it isn't, a user or an RV can be declined, and RVshare publishes no day count for the review. Screening repeats every year, and your RV is rechecked for ownership, registration, recalls and title brands. RVshare's privacy policy says its verification vendors may collect biometric data and government ID, and that RVshare does not store it.

RVshare says owners set their own prices, so the nightly ranges are guidance, not what renters will pay or what you keep after commission. A nightly rate also isn't monthly income, because you are paid only for booked nights. RVshare doesn't publish average or median owner earnings or how many nights a typical RV books, and no independent source measures them. Its homepage claims over 5 million nights booked and more than 100,000 rentals, which are cumulative company figures that say nothing about one owner's bookings. Its About page still says more than 4 million nights. RVshare's own blog also notes that a long RV loan plus fast depreciation can leave owners upside-down.

Can RVshare deactivate your account?

RVshare doesn't publish the grounds on which it removes a listing or closes an account, an appeal process, or payment holds, and its terms say they can change at any time with immediate effect. What its protection leaves out is better documented.

RVshare says the damage portion of its Protection Plan is a contract, not insurance, and that the Crum & Forster liability policy is secondary (excess) coverage that does not cover damage to the rented RV. That liability coverage comes through a surplus lines insurer that, RVshare says, does not participate in state guaranty funds, and coverage is subject to policy exclusions. RVshare's terms describe a Security Deposit Waiver, a non-insurance benefit that applies toward Protection Plan deductible amounts a renter would owe after the trip. RVshare also says payments, deposits and fees are protected only when paid through the platform, so a payment made off RVshare loses that protection.

Is RVshare legit?

RVshare, LLC operates the site, and its terms name RVshare Protection Products, LLC among the affiliates providing services. RVshare says it was founded in 2013, and in October 2020 it announced a $100+ million round led by KKR.

Taxes on RVshare income

RVshare's terms make you responsible for your own tax compliance on renting your RV. RVshare says it issues a 1099 only above $20,000 and 200 reservations. The IRS says gig income, including from renting out property, is taxable even without an information return. It also says self-employment tax generally applies if net earnings from self-employment are $400 or more.

On sales tax, RVshare says it collects and remits only where it is required to, because it is a marketplace facilitator under some states' laws. Where it doesn't collect, RVshare says you may be responsible for calculating and remitting certain taxes. In those places you set your own rate and choose whether to collect tax at all.

RVshare vs other RV rental platforms

Because RVshare's owner FAQ doesn't state its commission percentage, start by asking each platform, such as Outdoorsy, what it takes from a booking. Then compare payout timing and protection terms.

When you get paid is when each platform pays out. Bank transfers can add a few days, depending on your bank and payout method.
