Is Uber Eats worth it for delivery couriers?
Uber Eats pays per order, and Uber publishes neither an hourly rate nor the share it keeps from each fare. What suits you depends on where you deliver, how you travel and how much you want to know about your pay in advance.
Uber Eats makes sense if
You want to see the pay before you commit to an order
You want to keep every tip
You deliver in New York City and want a posted pay floor
Choose another platform if
You want repairs to your own car covered
You deliver by bike, e-bike or on foot and want insurance
You need to know what the platform keeps from each fare
A failed background check would leave you without recourse
How much Uber Eats takes from your pay
Uber doesn't publish a fixed percentage or dollar amount that it keeps. It says courier fares are based on anticipated time and effort plus local factors, and that earnings vary by city. For grocery orders, Uber says couriers pay a portion of the customer's delivery fee to Uber, again with no percentage given. Customers pay their own delivery and service fees on top, and Uber doesn't say how much of those reaches you.
Uber Eats fees
- Uber Eats keeps
Uber says fares reflect anticipated time, effort and local factors, and vary by city.
Uber states no percentage for the portion couriers pay.
- Customers pay on top
Customers pay this fee; Uber doesn't say how much reaches you.
Charged to customers on grocery orders, separate from the delivery fee.
- Instant payout fee
Free in New York City; Uber Pro Card payouts after every trip are free.
Weekly cap is $6,000; New York City allows one cash-out a day.
How and when Uber Eats pays you
Uber's earnings page says the default weekly deposit usually arrives on Thursdays and goes to your bank account. Instant Pay is the faster option. It needs a debit card and costs $1.75 per cash-out (free in New York City), up to six times a day (once a day in NYC).

Uber Eats requirements and how long approval takes
Uber sets the minimum age by how you deliver: 18 for bike or foot couriers, 19 for motorbike or scooter couriers, and 21 for car couriers in California and New York State. Every U.S. courier passes a background screening before delivering, and Uber reruns criminal checks every year. Uber says availability varies by city and that proof of residency is required in many markets, so check your city before you start. For cars, Uber says most 2-door and 4-door vehicles qualify. Uber says activation generally takes from a few minutes to 48 hours after you submit everything, depending on your documents and the background check.
Uber Eats requirements
- Age
Motorbike or scooter couriers must be 19 and hold a valid license.
Uber says the minimum age for car couriers is higher in these places.
- ID and documents
Bike or foot couriers need these for the background screening.
Car couriers also need this to pass the background screening.
- Background check
Must pass background screening
All US couriers must pass screening before they can deliver.

Earnings figures
Uber's courier page gives no dollar or hourly earnings figure. It says earnings come from base fare, promotions and tips, and that fares are based on time and distance with demand factors. Uber also says you see the fare before you accept an order, including the base fare and any upfront customer tip. That is pay for one order, not an hourly or monthly figure, and it doesn't count fuel, vehicle costs or time spent waiting. The New York City figure above is a city rule for app delivery workers there, set by the city's consumer and worker protection agency, not an Uber average. Uber also says couriers can work as little or as much as they like, which is a claim about flexibility, not about income.
Can Uber Eats deactivate your account?
Yes. Uber says the most common reasons couriers lose access are expired documents and Real-Time ID Check failures. If your selfie doesn't match or fraud is detected, Uber says the account is temporarily blocked from going online and may be deactivated after review. Account sharing isn't allowed in the U.S. Couriers can also lose access for ratings below their city's minimum average (Uber says it will warn you when you approach it) and for delivery fraud such as cancellation abuse, food theft or time-on-trip fraud. Uber may remove access without advance notice for legal or safety reasons, and it reserves the right to deduct amounts from payments if it suspects misuse.
Uber says you should be able to request a review in the in-app Review Center and submit evidence, but it promises review only in most cases. Background check failures generally aren't treated as deactivations and aren't part of that appeal, except where local law says otherwise. Uber publishes no decision deadline for appeals. In New York City, Uber agreed as part of a January 2026 settlement to reinstate as many as 10,000 couriers deactivated between December 2023 and September 2024.
Uber's delivery insurance has limits. Uber says it doesn't pay for damage to your own vehicle or for your own injuries, though optional injury protection is available in most states. Uber says there is no coverage when you're offline, and none for bike, e-bike or walking couriers unless the law requires it.
Is Uber Eats legit?
Uber Eats is run by Portier, LLC, a Delaware company wholly owned by Uber Technologies, which files annual reports with the SEC. Uber's FY2025 annual report lists courier and driver classification as a key risk factor. In New York City, the city's consumer and worker protection agency alleged that Uber Eats failed to pay minimum pay on canceled trips, and the matter ended in a January 2026 settlement. Seattle's labor office alleged pay disclosure and minimum payment violations, and those ended in settlements in August 2025 and August 2026. A settlement is not a court finding, and Uber denied wrongdoing in Seattle's 2025 settlement. California's misclassification suit against Uber, focused on rideshare, was unresolved as of October 2026. The FTC's 2017 settlement concerned earnings claims to rideshare drivers, not couriers.

Scams that use Uber Eats' name
Uber says scammers pose as Uber to get banking details from drivers and delivery partners. Uber's scam guidance is an older page from 2019, so treat it as a baseline.
Taxes on Uber Eats income
Uber says it issues a 1099-K when gross trip or order earnings reach $20,000, and some states set a lower threshold. For 2025 Uber cites $20,000 and 200 transactions. Promotion and referral payments of $600 or more are reported on a 1099-NEC. You can opt in to receive a 1099 below the threshold, and backup withholding triggers a 1099-K at any amount.
Uber Eats vs other delivery apps
Uber Eats is one of several delivery apps. DoorDash, Grubhub and Spark Driver have their own profiles, and for how this kind of work pays in general, see food delivery driving.

Uber Eats questions
Uber says couriers keep 100% of tips.
Uber's sign-up page lists consent to screening, document upload and a profile photo as the steps and mentions no fee. A request for money to unlock deliveries does not match that process.
