Selling printables on Etsy

Designing downloadable planners, wall art and other printables, then listing them as instant downloads. Most sellers use Etsy search to reach buyers; some also run a store of their own on Payhip or Gumroad.

Main catch
sales depend on search ranking

Printable sellers design a file once, such as a planner, wall art or a checklist, and list it as an instant download that buyers receive right after paying. On Etsy, digital items must be made or designed by the seller, and buyers find listings through Etsy search.

On an example $10 sale (a round price, not a sourced one), Etsy keeps a 6.5% transaction fee and a $0.20 listing fee, plus a 3% + $0.25 processing fee at the U.S. bank-account rate. That is $0.65 + $0.20 + $0.55, or $1.40, counting the listing fee once per sale as it is on a multi-quantity listing, so you'd keep about $8.60 a sale. Offsite Ads fees and sales tax aren't in that figure, and neither are the hours you spend designing and listing. Your price could be higher or lower.

The catch is ranking. Etsy says new or renewed listings get only a small temporary boost, so sales depend on tags, photos and reviews you keep working on.

How Etsy pays printable sellers

You set one price per file. Etsy doesn't allow variations on digital listings, so a different size or color is a separate listing, and it doesn't allow return policies on them, so refunds are at your discretion.

The listing fee repeats: a multi-quantity listing is renewed at $0.20 after each sale, which is why the calculator charges it on every sale. The Offsite Ads fee applies only to orders Etsy attributes to those ads: 15%, or 12% for shops with $10,000 or more in sales over the prior 365 days. Those larger shops can't opt out.

What digital planners are priced at

No published source measures how many printables a typical shop sells, so the table shows prices instead: what Etsy listings under the search term digital planner 2026 charge.

The RankHero range covers listing prices for one search term, not what sells or how often. For a nearby job, BLS reports a median of $30.27 an hour for graphic designers, counting employees only.

Design time isn't in the calculator: divide a file's lifetime earnings after fees by the hours spent making and listing it, as the hourly earnings guide shows.

Where to sell printables: Etsy and other stores

Fees and payout timing differ by store.

A dash means the platform doesn't publish it. Full terms are on each platform's page. Checked Nov 7, 2026; confirm on the official page before you sign up.

  • Etsy if you want buyers to find your files through Etsy search.
  • Gumroad if you sell from your own link: it acts as merchant of record, collecting and remitting sales tax, as Etsy does in marketplace-facilitator states.
  • Payhip if you'd pay a monthly plan for a lower fee: the Plus plan is $29 a month with a 2% transaction fee, against 5% on the free plan, but Payhip doesn't transfer money to your bank itself, so it reaches you through PayPal or Stripe.
  • Creative Market if you make polished design assets: shop owners are paid a share of net revenue on standard-license sales.
  • Goodnotes Marketplace if you make digital stationery: anyone can apply, and the commission rate is set in the contract.

How buyers find printables: Etsy search and Pinterest

Etsy matches queries against listing text, tags, the first photo and reviews, and advises filling all 13 tags and choosing specific categories. Etsy Plus, Star Seller and Etsy Ads don't directly change organic placement. Customer service signals, including response rate and case rate over the past three months, feed ranking, and results are personalized to each shopper.

Pinterest is a second route. Pinterest treats Etsy shops as marketplace or social accounts, not websites, so shops are claimed through a separate path. Gumroad and Payhip store links depend on traffic you bring yourself.

Making a planner file: formats, limits and licenses

An Etsy instant-download listing takes up to five files of 20MB each.

Etsy's supported digital file types include PDF, PNG, JPG and ZIP; a native Goodnotes format isn't on the list.

Licenses decide what goes inside the file. Canva's license allows Free Content in templates sold to third parties, while Pro Content is licensed for a single design and can't be distributed standalone.

Etsy rules on AI, original designs and taxes

Etsy's creativity standards allow digital downloads only of your original designs. On AI, Etsy's seller handbook says use must be disclosed in the listing description. Entirely bot-generated content is prohibited because each item needs individual human input. AI-generated functional instructions such as guides, patterns and manuals aren't allowed, which affects planner how-to guides, and selling AI prompt bundles is prohibited.

For sales tax, Etsy calculates, collects and remits US sales tax on digital orders in marketplace-facilitator states, so you do nothing there. Check your state's rules for anywhere that page doesn't cover, and ask your city or county about a business license.

The IRS says online-selling income must be reported even without a 1099-K, a form platforms file only above $20,000 and 200 transactions; see taxes on side income.

Etsy seller risks: suspensions, takedowns and scams

  • Etsy may restrict visibility, hold reserves on payments or suspend accounts, and may terminate accounts at any time without notice. Suspended sellers still owe outstanding fees, and listing fees are non-refundable.
  • Etsy terminates sellers who get repeat infringement notices, so a file built on someone else's artwork can end the shop.
  • Competition is heavy: Etsy's active sellers fell 10.9% to 5.5 million in Q3 2025, a drop Investing.com attributed to the seller set-up fee.

Who should sell printables, and who should skip it

Good fit:

  • You can build a clean PDF or image file in a design tool. Canva Free Content can go in templates you sell; Pro Content can't.
  • You'll keep editing tags, photos and listing text.
  • You can wait out slow early weeks, because new listings get only a brief boost.

Skip it if:

Your first week on Etsy

  1. Make one finished PDF or PNG file, such as a planner or wall art, in a design tool, using only your own designs.
  2. Open your shop at etsy.com/sell and pay the set-up fee if Etsy charges one.
  3. Add your bank details carefully. Deposits default to weekly on Mondays, Etsy may hold a reserve on new sellers, and changing bank details triggers a 5-day hold. See how side-hustle payouts work.
  4. Create an instant-download listing, upload your file, and add an AI disclosure to the description if you used AI.
  5. Fill every tag slot, pick the most specific category, add several photos, then pay the $0.20 listing fee. Listings expire after four months, so renew the ones that get views.
  6. Check Etsy messages daily and answer buyers quickly, since response rate feeds ranking.
