Buyers receive a Canva template link that opens their own editable copy, according to Payhip's guide to selling Canva templates. Sellers put that link behind an Etsy listing or a storefront of their own.
Etsy keeps a 6.5% transaction fee and 3% + $0.25 payment processing per order, plus a $0.20 listing fee. On an example $10 sale, a round price rather than a sourced one, that is $0.65 + $0.55 + $0.20, counting the listing fee once per sale, so you'd keep about $8.60 a sale before design time and Canva Pro. Your own price moves that up or down.
The catch is Canva's license. Templates sold for use inside Canva can use its elements, but Canva's content can't be resold on its own or delivered in a file a buyer can extract it from, so selling exported files is far more limited. It suits people who design original layouts and are happy to sell template links.
How a template sale pays out
Buyers pay the price you set, and the platform takes its fees before paying you. On Etsy that happens per order. On Gumroad and Payhip you run a storefront, so no marketplace search sends buyers your way.
Canva Creators works differently. It pays royalties based on template popularity rather than a price per sale.
What Canva template sellers earn
No government data covers template sellers. BLS tracks a nearby job, where graphic designers had a median of $30.27 an hour, and that data excludes self-employed workers. Payhip's guide claims top Etsy Canva listings reach 1,000 to 3,000 sales at about $10. That is a best-case marketing claim from a rival storefront, and it is revenue before fees and costs.
Where a $10 template sale on Etsy goes
The worked example from the sources below. Yours will differ.
- You keep $8.60
- Platform fee (6.5%) $0.65
- Your costs $0.75
You keep about $8.60 per template sale on Etsy in this example, before taxes.
What you'd keep per template sale on Etsy
Set to the sourced example. Drag any slider to match your situation.
- You keep per template sale on Etsy
- $8.60
- Fee and costs
- $1.40
- Per month
- $86
Where these numbers come from
- Price per template sale on Etsy
- Example price, not a sourced figure. Etsy's fee facts are sourced, but no source publishes a typical Canva template price.
- Platform fee
- Etsy's 6.5% transaction fee on the order total. The 3% payment processing fee for U.S. bank accounts is $0.30 on a $10 sale and, with its $0.25 per-order charge, is included in costPerUnit.Source
- Your costs
- Processing on a $10 sale: 3% ($0.30) plus $0.25 per order (F66), plus the $0.20 listing fee (F64), assuming one sale per listing. Canva Pro and other tools are not included.
Startup costs: Etsy fees and optional plans
The only required cost is Etsy's per-listing fee.
| What you pay for | Cost |
|---|---|
| You'll need | |
| Etsy listing fee | 20¢ each |
| Optional | |
| Etsy Plus subscription | $10 a month |
| Payhip Plus plan | $29 a month |
| Payhip Pro plan | $99 a month |
Payhip's Free plan has no monthly cost, so the paid Payhip plans and Etsy Plus are optional.
Where to sell: Etsy, Canva Creators, Gumroad or Payhip
- Etsy if you want a predictable payout rhythm: new sellers get weekly Monday deposits by default, and digital sales aren't held in reserve.
- Canva Creators if you have a portfolio and want Canva's own users as buyers: it is the licensed route to publish templates in Canva's marketplace, but only a small number of creators are onboarded.
- Gumroad if you sell from your own link and want sales tax handled: it has been merchant of record since Jan 1, 2025, as Etsy is for U.S. digital orders.
- Payhip if you want a storefront with no monthly fee: the free plan takes 5% a sale, and paid plans lower or remove that fee.
How buyers find and receive your template
On Etsy, buyers come to a seller page, and Payhip says that leaves you no blog or email list of your own. A storefront of your own lets you build both, with social media and blog posts as Payhip's suggested traffic sources.
Payhip's guide says sellers copy the link from Share > Template Link in Canva and that a store can send it as a PDF automatically after purchase. It also says buyers can customize their copy without affecting your original or other buyers' access.
Canva's license and other rules for selling templates
Canva's help page on products for sale allows selling only original designs, and its license limits what those designs can contain.
What Canva allows
- Templates used on Canva: the license lists design templates solely for use on Canva as a permitted use, so a template link can include Canva's elements.
- Free Content outside Canva: it can go in templates sold to third parties, including business card, greeting card and brochure templates.
- Pro Content: licensed for a single design and never distributed as a standalone item, so keep it inside template links.
- Never allowed: reselling Canva content itself, or a product that lets someone extract the content as a file. Fonts only work on a device with a licensed copy of Canva, and Editorial Use Only content can't be used commercially.
Etsy, tax and local rules
Etsy requires everything you list to be made, designed, handpicked or sourced by you, and its Creativity Standards allow digital downloads only as your original designs. Etsy collects and remits U.S. sales tax on digital orders by U.S. buyers. Business license rules vary by state and city, so check your local business license office before you sell.
Marketplaces may send a 1099-K at $20,000 and 200 transactions or lower, gig income must be reported even without a form, and software subscriptions can reduce net earnings; see Taxes on side income.
Selling templates: IP reports, closures and scams
Etsy may suspend or terminate accounts for policy violations, and you still owe outstanding fees. Its seller policy also prohibits listings that violate someone else's IP rights and lets rights holders report infringement.
Who template selling fits, and who should skip it
Fits if:
- You can design original layouts and are comfortable keeping them inside Canva's license limits.
- You can wait for your first deposit while a listing sits unsold.
- You'd rather make editable resume, social or document templates than physical goods you ship.
Skip it if:
- You need money within days of a sale. New Etsy sellers wait about two weeks for funds.
- You'd rather sell files buyers download and keep. Selling printables on Etsy covers PDF planners and wall art, and print on demand puts designs on shirts and mugs.
- You want recurring revenue. Micro-SaaS bills subscribers monthly, and the digital products category has more files to sell.
Your first week selling a Canva template
- Build one original template in Canva and check every element against the license rules above.
- Open an Etsy shop, paying any one-time set-up fee Etsy shows during onboarding, and list the template as a digital download. Payhip's guide describes delivering the template link in a PDF. Each listing costs $0.20.
- Add your bank details before your first sale, since Etsy holds funds for 5 days after a bank change.
- Expect your first deposit about 14 days after a sale: new sellers' funds are generally eligible then.
- Apply to Canva Creators with a portfolio. If you're accepted, a W-9 is required before payout.
- Optionally, open a free Payhip account as a second storefront.
Frequently asked questions
Gumroad charges 10% + $0.50 per transaction on direct sales, and that figure excludes card or PayPal processing fees.
Payhip's Free plan has a 5% transaction fee, and the Plus plan has a 2% fee. The Pro plan has no Payhip transaction fee, and PayPal or Stripe processing fees apply on every plan.
Canva pays royalties based on template popularity, and no fixed rate is published. Payouts go out around the 15th of each month once you reach the threshold.
You apply with a portfolio. Only a small number of creators are onboarded, and accepted creators need a W-9 on file before payout if they are in the U.S.
No sourced average price exists. One seller-tool vendor says it could not find one, so the price is yours to set.
