How much does Etsy take from a sale?
On a typical U.S. order, Etsy takes three fees: a $0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee, and a payment processing fee of 3% plus $0.25. On a $50 item with no shipping charged, that comes to $5.20, leaving you $44.80 before your own costs.
There's no single percentage that covers every order. The $0.20 and $0.25 are flat, so they take a bigger share of cheap items: on a $5 item, the same three fees come to $0.93, or 18.6% of the price. Shipping you charge, sales tax the buyer pays and an Offsite Ads sale all change the total too.
Etsy selling fees explained
These are the fees the calculator applies to a U.S. order paid through Etsy Payments, with the Etsy page each one comes from.
Etsy U.S. selling fees
- Listing fee$0.20 per listing
- Charged when you list, whether or not it sells. Listings last four months, then renew at the same fee. Selling more than one of a listing in an order adds $0.20 for each extra item.
- Transaction fee6.5%
- The order total: item price plus any shipping and gift wrap you charge the buyer.
- Payment processing (Etsy Payments)3% + $0.25 per order
- The total sale price, including shipping and any sales tax collected. The $0.25 is charged once per order.
Not included in the estimate
- Etsy Ads (on-Etsy advertising): set by your own campaign budget, not a per-order rate. Add what you spend in Other costs.
- Currency conversion: charged when your listing currency differs from your payment account currency.
- Regulatory operating fees: charged in some countries outside the U.S.
- Shop setup fee, Etsy Plus subscription, refunds and instant deposit fees. (Shipping labels are your shipping cost: enter what you pay.)
How to calculate Etsy fees and profit
Two numbers answer two different questions. Etsy fees tell you what Etsy keeps. Profit tells you what you keep once your own costs come out too.
The first step is revenue: your item price times the quantity, minus any discount you fund, plus the shipping and gift wrap you charge the buyer. Etsy's percentage fees are worked out from that. Your profit then subtracts what you spend: materials or the item itself, the postage you pay, packaging and anything else the order costs you.
Keep shipping charged and shipping paid apart. If you charge the buyer $6 for shipping and the label costs you $7, the $6 counts as revenue (and Etsy charges fees on it), while the $7 is one of your costs.
The formula
Revenue
Item price × quantity − any discount you fund + shipping and gift wrap you charge the buyer
Etsy fees
$0.20 × quantity + 6.5% of revenue + 3% of (revenue + sales tax) + $0.25, plus the Offsite Ads fee if the order came from one
Left after Etsy fees
Revenue − Etsy fees
Profit
What's left after Etsy fees − (your cost per item × quantity + your shipping, gift wrap and other costs)
Profit margin
Profit ÷ revenue
What it assumes
- You sell in the U.S., list in U.S. dollars and are paid through Etsy Payments.
- The order is one or more units of a single listing.
- Each fee line is rounded to the cent before adding them up.
- The $0.20 listing fee is counted once for each item sold.
- The Offsite Ads fee applies only when you choose it, for an order that came from an Offsite Ad.
What it doesn't include
- Fees for sellers outside the U.S., including regulatory operating fees
- Currency conversion fees
- Etsy Ads spending, unless you add it to other costs
- Etsy Plus, the shop setup fee and instant deposit fees
- Refunds, returns and income tax
Worked example
$100 item with $10 shipping charged
- Revenue
- $110.00
- Listing fee
- $0.20
- Transaction fee (6.5% of $110)
- $7.15
- Payment processing (3% of $110 + $0.25)
- $3.55
- Total Etsy fees
- $10.90
- Left after Etsy fees
- $99.10
- Profit after your $33 in costs
- $66.10
Etsy fee and profit examples
Three orders, from a small digital download to a sale that came through an Offsite Ad.
| Order | Revenue | Etsy fees | Your costs | Profit | Margin |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $8 digital download | $8.00 | $1.21 | $0.00 | $6.79 | 84.9% |
| $35 item, $6 shipping charged | $41.00 | $4.35 | $17.00 | $19.65 | 47.9% |
| $80 item from an Offsite Ad | $88.00 | $22.01 | $34.00 | $31.99 | 36.4% |
The digital download keeps the highest share because there's nothing to make or ship, even though the flat fees take a larger cut of the price. The Offsite Ads order earns the most in dollars, but the 15% ad fee alone costs more than the other Etsy fees combined.
How to price an Etsy product for a target profit
Switch the calculator to Find my selling price, enter the profit you want from each order and what the order costs you, and it works out the lowest item price that gets you there after Etsy's fees.
For example, to make $20 on an item that costs $15 to make and $5 to ship, with no shipping charged to the buyer, the item needs to sell for at least $44.69. At that price, Etsy's fees come to $4.69, and your $20 in costs leaves exactly $20.
This is a floor based on fees and costs, not a market price. Whether buyers will pay it depends on what similar items sell for, and returns, unsold stock and the time you spend all come out of profit too. Fixed fees matter most at low prices, so a cheap item needs a bigger markup to clear the same profit. To price for a percentage margin instead of a dollar amount, use the profit margin calculator with your Etsy fees entered as selling costs.
Does Etsy charge fees on shipping and sales tax?
Etsy charges its fees on shipping you charge the buyer, but sales tax is treated differently.
- Shipping charged to the buyer counts toward both the 6.5% transaction fee and the payment processing fee.
- Your own shipping cost, such as the postage label you buy, isn't an Etsy fee. It's one of your costs, so it lowers your profit but not your fees.
- Sales tax the buyer pays isn't your revenue, and Etsy doesn't charge the 6.5% transaction fee on it. It is included in the amount the payment processing fee is charged on, so $10 of sales tax adds $0.30 to that fee.
Gift wrap you charge for works like shipping: it's part of the order total that the transaction and processing fees apply to.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. The listing fee is charged when you publish a listing, whether or not it sells, and a listing lasts four months before it renews at the same fee. If someone buys more than one of a listing in a single order, Etsy charges $0.20 for each extra item.
Etsy Ads promote your listings on Etsy itself, and you pay for them from a budget you choose. Offsite Ads are ads Etsy runs on other websites, and you pay a percentage only on orders that come from them. If a buyer's last click before buying was an Etsy Ad, only the Etsy Ads cost applies to that order.
The fee is 15% for shops that have never made $10,000 in any 365-day period, and those shops can opt out. Once a shop reaches $10,000 in a 365-day period, the fee drops to 12%, and the shop has to stay in Offsite Ads for as long as it's open. Either way, the fee for one order is never more than $100.
Per order. A buyer who orders three of your items pays one processing fee of 3% of the order total plus $0.25, not $0.25 three times. The $0.20 listing fee, by contrast, applies to each item sold.
It applies Etsy's published U.S. rates to the numbers you enter, so it should land within a few cents for a typical order. Your actual charges can differ because of rounding, discounts, refunds, orders with several different listings, or a change to Etsy's rates. Your Etsy Payment account shows exactly what was charged.
