Side income is taxable whether or not a 1099 arrives: you owe income tax on the profit, plus self-employment (SE) tax once net earnings pass a low line. The IRS gig economy page lists part-time, temporary or side work that no information form reports as income you still report.

The IRS defines self-employed to include part-time businesses and gig workers, so the rules below cover a delivery driver with a W-2 job as much as a full-time freelancer. Tax comes due as you earn: self-employed people generally pay quarterly estimated tax covering income tax and SE tax.

Taxes as you earn

While you earn, you keep records, count the costs that cut your profit, and find out which local taxes apply.

Records that back up your income

The IRS lets you choose any recordkeeping system that clearly shows income and expenses, so a spreadsheet counts. Keep supporting records generally until the 3-year assessment period expires, or 6 years if you omit over 25% of gross income.

Driving costs that lower your profit

SE tax is figured on gross business income minus ordinary and necessary expenses, so qualifying costs reduce it. For anyone in food delivery driving, that is where the cost of using your car comes in.

Lodging taxes when you rent a room

Lodging and sales taxes are separate from income tax, and who collects them depends on the place and the platform. RVshare says collection depends on jurisdiction and an owner may be responsible elsewhere. Those rules vary by state and city.

Taxes during the year

You generally have to make estimated payments if you expect to owe $1,000 or more when you file, and skipping them can cost you a penalty. It applies when not enough tax is paid through withholding or estimates, and withholding from a W-2 job counts, and late payments can be penalized even when a refund is due. Most taxpayers avoid the penalty by owing less than $1,000 after withholding, or by paying at least 90% of this year's tax or 100% of last year's. You can pay online, by phone, through the IRS app or your IRS online account, or by mail with 1040-ES vouchers.

Taxes on side income at filing time

At filing, the forms you received, your profit and your SE tax meet on one return.

Small pay and a missing 1099-NEC

A 1099-NEC must reach you by January 31 after the tax year, and a 1099-MISC generally does too. Spark Driver says no tax is withheld and a 1099 is issued, while Uber says drivers may get a 1099-NEC for bonuses or referrals.

Airbnb's tax page says its 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC threshold is $600 for 2025 and $2,000 from tax year 2026.

If a payer asks for a W-9, that form is how you give your correct TIN.

Online sales and a 1099-K

A 1099-K comes from a payment app or marketplace such as eBay or PayPal. Card payments have no minimum for 1099-K reporting, and third-party networks currently report above $20,000 and more than 200 transactions. Networks may send one below that, and the IRS says all income must be reported regardless, including personal items sold at a gain. That matters to eBay sellers and anyone in thrift store flipping.

Self-employment tax on side profit

SE tax is the sum of Social Security and Medicare taxes, figured on Schedule SE while Schedule C reports the profit. The profit flows to page 1 of Form 1040, and one-half of the SE tax is deductible when figuring AGI. Here is the arithmetic for a W-2 employee with a few thousand dollars of side profit.

Worked example

A W-2 employee with a few thousand dollars of side profit

Example net profit from side work (income minus expenses)
$3,000
Net earnings needed to file Schedule SE
$400
Share of net earnings subject to SE tax
92.35%
Amount subject to SE tax: $3,000 × 92.35%
$2,770.50
SE tax rate: Social Security plus Medicare
12.4% + 2.9%
SE tax: $2,770.50 × 15.3%
$423.89
Half of SE tax, deducted when figuring income: $423.89 ÷ 2
$211.94

Leaves out federal and state income tax, which depends on your W-2 wages, bracket and deductions.

Hobbies and one-off sales

Not every payout belongs on Schedule C. A loss on personal-use property isn't deductible, and gains and losses on it go on Form 8949 and Schedule D, which is where a one-off sale of a personal item at a loss lands. If a 1099-K arrives for that sale, enter its amount in the entry space at the top of Schedule 1.

A hobby is different: its income is still reported, on Schedule 1 line 8j. The IRS looks at all the facts and circumstances, and books and records, time and effort, and profit intent point toward a business.

Rental income from a room, car or RV

Rental hosts can get a 1099-K below the federal line: Airbnb says it may issue a 1099-K below the federal threshold if a state's threshold is lower, and it lists states and districts with lower thresholds, including Arkansas, Illinois and Virginia. Hosts who are renting out a spare room on Airbnb should look up their own state's figure.

What survey, AI and affiliate platforms say about taxes

Survey, AI-training and affiliate platforms differ on whether they send a form at all, but the income is reportable either way.

Surveys, panels and research studies

Survey and panel pay is reportable with or without a form: Prolific says all earnings must be reported regardless of amount. The forms differ by site:

  • Swagbucks files a 1099 with the IRS and says members are responsible for their own tax liability.
  • Survey Junkie requires a W-9 from U.S. residents earning over $600 in a calendar year, then issues a 1099.
  • Prolific issues no 1099, and PayPal cashouts are included on PayPal's 1099-K.
  • CloudResearch Connect says rewards may be taxable and the participant is responsible for reporting.

For rewards paid in goods, the IRS says business income includes payments in property or services at fair market value. That page doesn't name survey rewards or gift cards. See paid online surveys for the work itself.

AI training and microtasks

AI training platforms treat their workers as contractors who handle their own taxes:

  • DataAnnotation's FAQ calls its workers contractors.
  • Alignerr's terms make users responsible for their own taxes and don't mention a 1099.
  • Clickworker tells workers they are personally responsible for taxing their income and requires an SSN and a signed W-9 from U.S. workers to be paid.

The same Schedule C and Schedule SE rules apply to anyone rating AI responses.

Affiliate programs

Affiliate programs collect tax details before they pay:

  • Amazon Associates requires a tax interview validated by the IRS before commissions are paid and issues a 1099 by Jan 29 to associates paid $600 or more.
  • Impact requires a W-9 once earnings reach $2,000 in a U.S. tax year.
  • PartnerStack needs tax information before any withdrawal.

The program rules sit behind affiliate marketing income.

App and software income

App stores and payment tools ask for tax details too. Google Play requires U.S. merchants to submit a W-9 and files a 1099-K only above US$20,000 and 200 transactions. Lemon Squeezy says a seller may owe income tax on payouts. Both apply to subscription or paid mobile apps.

Checklist

  • Report side income even when no form arrives

The IRS says gig and side income must be reported in any form, including cash, even when no information return arrives.

  • Report business income and expenses on Schedule C

Self-employed people, including part-time and gig workers, file Schedule C (Form 1040) to report income or loss.

  • Reconcile every tax form against your own records

Income is still reportable whether or not a form arrives, so compare each form with what you actually earned.

  • Treat a gross payment-network amount as a starting point

The form reports the gross amount without subtracting fees, refunds or shipping, so it can exceed your profit.

The IRS gig economy tax center is the place to check each of these against the official rules.
