HopSkipDrive's driver page says drivers earn a base fare plus extra for longer trips, and that payouts vary by metro, volume and availability. A Copilot Careers recruiting post for a Colorado listing advertises up to $50 per ride, which is the recruiter's claim, not typical pay.

The main catch is the wait. Certification takes 25 to 60 days, and HopSkipDrive says the work is designed for people with caregiving experience, not just driving experience. It suits adults with childcare experience, a qualifying car and time to get certified before the first ride.

How kid transport drivers get paid

HopSkipDrive's pricing terms describe driver pay per ride as a starting fare plus estimated mileage and actual time. They state no separate fuel reimbursement. Drivers claim rides in the app and choose their schedule, per HopSkipDrive's driver page, and CBS Colorado reports incentives and bonuses tied to rides.

Kango's customers pay minimum fares of $20 to $24 by region, plus a $3 safe ride fee. Kango deducts service fees from what customers pay before paying the driver, and it doesn't state the percentage.

The BLS figures exclude self-employed workers, so they describe wages for employed shuttle drivers and chauffeurs, not gig CareDrivers. The $50 and $48 figures are marketing and best case. Neither company publishes what drivers take home.

Where the hours go

The pricing terms above don't mention pay for waiting between rides. Work also follows the school calendar. HopSkipDrive's help center says rides are seasonal, with fewer over summer, though CBS Colorado reports summer rides in Colorado.

Where to find kid transport driving work

HopSkipDrive and Kango both publish driver sign-up pages.

All listed platforms require you to pass a background check.

First pay combines each platform's approval time and payout delay. Bank transfers can add a few days, depending on your bank and payout method. Full terms are on each platform's page. Checked Oct 27, 2026; confirm on the official page before you sign up.

HopSkipDrive's driver page lists active states as AZ, CA, CO, FL (Miami), IN, KS, ME, MD, MI, MN, MO, OK, PA, TN, TX, VA, WA and WI, with Orlando, Tampa, Atlanta, Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Charlotte and Raleigh coming soon. Kango's FAQ lists California and Phoenix and Tucson in Arizona. Recruiting posts also appear on job boards, but apply through HopSkipDrive's own page. Zum's careers page lists school bus and attendant roles with paid CDL training, and separately lists non-CDL van driver roles. Its depots are hiring in places like Fresno, Nashville and Rockford. These are depot jobs, and the page doesn't state pay. Other driving work is listed under gig and delivery work.

Requirements and rules in the U.S.

Rules for carrying minors for pay differ by state and city, so check your state's motor vehicle agency and transportation regulator before applying.

HopSkipDrive says it carries commercial insurance on platform rides and drivers keep personal auto insurance. It requires proof of insurance consistent with state law. A law firm guide says standard personal auto policies typically exclude carrying passengers for a fee, so ask your insurer before your first ride.

As an independent contractor you are self-employed. The IRS says self-employment tax usually applies once net earnings reach $400, at 12.4% for Social Security plus 2.9% for Medicare.

Risks and red flags

HopSkipDrive's terms allow immediate deactivation if you no longer qualify or for safety reasons, with notice and an opportunity to cure. Your driving record is also monitored on an ongoing basis. Kango's driver terms let it end the relationship at its sole discretion if standards aren't met.

HopSkipDrive states no minimum number of rides.

Who kid transport driving fits, and who should skip it

It fits if you:

  • Have childcare experience you can show on HopSkipDrive's caregiving video screening or meet Kango's childcare requirement.
  • Want to choose which rides to claim rather than follow a set shift.
  • Can accept pay that follows the school calendar.

Skip it if you:

How to start

  1. Check whether your area is on HopSkipDrive's driver page or in Kango's service area list.
  2. Confirm the basics on HopSkipDrive's driver page: age 21 or older, three years of driving experience and a qualifying four-door car.
  3. Ask your auto insurer whether your policy covers paid passenger driving.
  4. Apply through HopSkipDrive and complete the 15-point certification, including the caregiving video screening and the fingerprint-based background check. For Kango, apply on its driver page and expect interviews, fingerprinting and training.
  5. Set up the Stripe account HopSkipDrive's payment help page says payouts require.
  6. Set aside money for self-employment tax from your first payout.
