Is Whatnot worth it for live sellers?

Whatnot keeps 8% of most sales plus 2.9% and $0.30 per order for payment processing, and most sellers must ship within 2 business days to keep their account in good standing.

Whatnot seller fees

Commission applies to the item's final sale price, while the processing fee applies to the whole order, including shipping and sales tax the buyer pays. That means what you keep is lower than the commission rate alone suggests. Whatnot says there are no listing fees and that fees are charged at each buyer checkout, even if purchases are later bundled.

How and when Whatnot pays you

Whatnot says earnings become available up to 4 hours after confirmed delivery, and once you request a payout it typically arrives in 1 to 2 business days. Early Payout makes earnings available when you generate the shipping label, with no fee, but you need a 4.8 rating, 10 or more live shows and either $100,000 in lifetime sales or 1,000 lifetime orders. Whatnot's pages conflict on age. Its apply page (Feb 2026) lists 13 with guardian permission, while its Trust Center says its ID check confirms you are 18 or older, and its community guidelines require hosts to be 18 or older. Whatnot lists no U.S. state exclusions.

Whatnot seller verification and category approval

Whatnot says a third-party ID check confirms your identity, your age and that your ID matches your account. It says separate risk-signal screening can trigger extra verification or rejection. Its apply page (Feb 2026) names Luxury Bags & Accessories, Surprise Sets in Sneakers & Streetwear and Wholesale as gated categories. Whatnot's Trust Center says selling in a gated category before approval is a violation, and it publishes no processing time for those reviews. Get approval before you buy inventory for a gated category.

Whatnot shipping and buyer protection rules for sellers

Shipping you pay comes out of your earnings, and late scans can cost you selling access. Whatnot's Account Health page says most sellers must ship within 2 business days. An On-Time Scan Rate below 80% can lead to penalties or loss of selling access, and Whatnot sets a 95% threshold for Defect-Free Order Rate.

Whatnot's Seller Protection covers carrier fault, chargebacks and abusive claims, and Whatnot may share the cost when fault is unclear. It excludes cases where you don't respond within two business days. Without drop-off proof, you may bear the refund on a late shipment. Whatnot says coverage is not unlimited and may be reassessed, and refund decisions can be appealed. Buyers can report a problem within 30 days of purchase or 14 days of delivery.

How much Whatnot sellers make

The only earnings figures come from Whatnot itself, and no independent measurement of what sellers take home is published.

Figures Whatnot publishes

Per month

  • 13,000

Average monthly sales, live 3-4x weekly

Other figures

  • 1 in 8

    Sellers who are full time

Whatnot's $13,000 figure is gross sales for sellers who go live 3-4 times a week, a group that chose that schedule. It is before commission, processing, shipping and inventory costs, and Whatnot states no sample size or median. Whatnot also says the number of sellers earning $10K or more per month more than doubled year over year, without giving a count. Its seller page features top-seller testimonials, which it doesn't present as typical.

How to earn more on Whatnot

Whatnot's 2026 live-selling report names consistency as its central advice: go live regularly. Its help center recommends scheduling shows in advance so you can prepare listings, promote and build an audience, and says tags improve discoverability. Whatnot also offers paid Promote Tools such as Boost, which lasts up to 15 minutes. These cost you money, and Seller Hub reports a return on promotion spending so you can see whether it paid back. Whatnot doesn't publish a typical return.

Can Whatnot suspend your seller account?

Yes. Whatnot's enforcement ranges from a warning to a permanent ban, including suspensions of 48 hours or 7 days, and sellers may also face a higher commission. Whatnot says it can act on off-platform violations when it has irrefutable evidence, and it may suspend features such as going live during an investigation. Shill bidding leads to a ban, misstated values can lead to cancellation, refunds or a ban, and you are responsible for your guests' and employees' conduct. Whatnot prohibits alcohol, tobacco and nicotine, and medicine and medical devices, along with counterfeit, stolen and recalled items.

Whatnot says you can appeal any action by replying to the violation email. Suspended or banned sellers can also appeal in Account Health, though not everyone is eligible and Whatnot doesn't define the criteria. You must still fulfill existing orders, and creating a new account to evade a ban is prohibited. If you need to appeal, how to appeal a gig app deactivation walks through the general steps.

Taxes on Whatnot income

Whatnot says it issues the 1099-K through Stripe, and only to sellers with a connected Stripe account. It also says you must report all earnings whether or not you receive a form, and that Seller Statements are available to all sellers. Whatnot says some states set lower 1099-K thresholds than the federal one. It collects and remits U.S. sales tax from buyers, so you don't collect or remit it, though Whatnot says you may have your own sales-tax reporting obligations. See taxes on side income.

Whatnot vs other reselling marketplaces

Whatnot sells through live shows, while eBay, Poshmark, Depop and Mercari rely on listings you post and buyers browse. See more in reselling and flipping.

When you get paid is when each platform pays out. Bank transfers can add a few days, depending on your bank and payout method.
