How Shipt pays shoppers

Each order pays offer pay, which Shipt works out from its estimate of store size, drive time, time of day, item count and how likely substitutions are. Customer tips come on top, along with any bonus you qualify for. When a customer adds several items after you accept, the pay goes up with the extra effort, not with what the items cost.

Shipt's pay page gives a way to turn an offer into an hourly figure: multiply the offer by 60 and divide by the estimated minutes. Customers can tip before or after delivery, and Shipt may show an estimated tip on the offer, based on a pre-tip or the customer's history. Shipt says tips are not guaranteed, and customers can change a pre-tip after delivery.

How and when Shipt pays you

Anything you don't cash out by Sunday at 11:59 p.m. Central time goes into that week's deposit. Tips are paid in the pay period when they're captured, so a tip added on Sunday is often paid a week after the order itself.

How to become a Shipt shopper

You sign up in the Shipt shopper app, and the city area you choose at sign-up is the one you wait for. If you're placed on the waitlist and miss the deadline to confirm your interest when an opening comes, you follow the email's steps to reclaim your place.

Both figures are Shipt's own, and they are floors on offer pay per hour of Shipt's estimated time, not what shoppers take home. They leave out tips and bonuses, time spent waiting between offers, and gas. Shipt doesn't publish average shopper earnings. How to earn more on Shipt

Shipt's Shopper Hub says the more hours you put on your schedule, the more likely you are to get offers, and that experienced shoppers typically sign up for at least 12 time slots a week. It points to certifications, such as alcohol delivery where offered, to unlock more orders. Its advice for growing is to deliver on time, since late orders can lead to lower ratings and tips, and to wait on shopping two orders at once until you can do single orders accurately and on time.

Can Shipt deactivate your account?

Yes. Shipt's Shopper Stats page says shoppers should keep on-time and reliability rates of 90% or higher, alongside the rating minimum, to stay active. Reliability counts offers you drop in the hour before or during the delivery window, and Shipt forgives 1 of the last 50. Shoppers with low reliability may see fewer open offers in their metro.

Is Shipt legit?

Shipt is owned by Target and treats shoppers as independent contractors, and that classification is what most of its legal record is about. Before its 2020 move to effort-based pay, Shipt paid $5 per delivery plus 7.5 percent of the order, IEEE Spectrum reported.

    Shipt settled Minnesota's misclassification suit for $800,000, agreeing to explain deactivations in writing and allow appeals; shoppers stay contractors.

  2. Legal

    Payments went out from Shipt's $14.5 million settlement of a California class action alleging misclassification. Shipt denied the claims.

    The D.C. and Minnesota attorneys general sued Shipt, alleging shoppers are employees owed minimum wage, overtime and sick leave. Shipt disputed it.

Taxes on Shipt income

Shipt suggests setting aside 25-30% of each payment for taxes. It files 1099 forms through Stripe, so keep your name, address and SSN current in Stripe Express and choose e-delivery, since Shipt won't mail a paper copy. Every shopper can download a year-end statement in the app that shows tips separately, which helps with the new federal deduction for up to $25,000 of tipped income.
