Gridwise's 2025 data comes from drivers who log their work in its app, a self-selected group, and puts the median gross rate for Instacart shoppers at $12.21 an hour. That is before gas and other expenses and may not count unpaid time between batches, so it is not a typical outcome. The closest BLS benchmark, light truck drivers, shows a median of $21.57 an hour, but it excludes self-employed workers.

Instacart says shoppers keep all tips.

How batch pay and payouts work

Instacart says batch pay reflects expected effort: travel, item quantity and weight, and expected shopping time. Total earnings are batch pay plus promotions plus tips. The amount shown before you accept won't decrease if you complete the batch as accepted, and qualifying batches with several heavy items can carry an added heavy pay component. Instacart doesn't publish what share of pay comes from tips.

Direct deposit is weekly, Wednesday to Friday, for the prior Monday to Sunday week. Instant cashout costs a small fee, and Instacart doesn't state the amount.

These are the benchmarks that exist. None reports what shoppers keep per hour after gas and insurance.

Where the hours go

Instacart says batch visibility depends on your distance to the store, and busy stores show in the app. The app also shows which days and hours pay more per batch. Time spent driving to the store, waiting and driving home is unpaid. The calculator above uses an assumption for it.

Where to find grocery work

All listed platforms require you to be 18 or older and pass a background check.

First pay combines each platform's approval time and payout delay. Bank transfers can add a few days, depending on your bank and payout method. Full terms are on each platform's page. Checked Oct 27, 2026; confirm on the official page before you sign up.

DoorDash says Shop & Deliver pays more per order than its restaurant delivery, a provider claim with no dollar figure. Shipt and Spark Driver also take grocery work. More options are in gig and delivery work.

Requirements, insurance and taxes in the U.S.

Requirements. Instacart says shoppers must be 18 or older with a valid driver's license and Social Security number, and pass criminal and motor vehicle record checks run by partners including Checkr.

Insurance. Instacart's claim form page says its independent contractors must obtain their own insurance, including auto liability and workers' comp, plus licenses and permits. Insureon states that Instacart does not provide auto insurance to shoppers. A 2019 Instacart announcement described Shopper Injury Protection for U.S. full-service shoppers, up to $1 million in medical expenses; confirm it is still offered.

Alcohol and local rules. Instacart limits batches with alcohol, prescriptions and bulky or heavy items to certified or opted-in shoppers. Licensing varies by state and city. For example, Washington, D.C. licenses third-party alcohol delivery companies, not individual couriers. Check your state's alcohol agency.

Taxes. The IRS says self-employed people generally make quarterly estimated payments if they expect to owe $1,000 or more. Car costs are deductible for business use only, and the IRS requires records. See the IRS pages on self-employment tax and the gig economy tax center.

Risks and red flags

Instacart reserves the right to suspend or deactivate shopper accounts beyond its listed guidelines, which makes this a poor base for income you can't afford to lose. Heavy and bulky batches are physical work.

Who grocery delivery fits, and who should skip it

A good fit if:

  • You have a car and don't mind walking store aisles and carrying heavy bags, which food delivery driving mostly avoids.
  • You can accept pay that moves with store distance and time of day.

Consider skipping if:

  • You have no car or insurance. Dog walking needs neither.
  • You need a predictable price per job. House cleaning is priced per visit or hour.
  • You want to set your own prices. Handyman services lets you quote each job.

How to start

  1. Ask your auto insurer about delivery coverage. Insureon lists a personal auto endorsement, hired and non-owned auto, and commercial auto as options.
  2. Apply through Instacart's shopper page with your driver's license and Social Security number ready.
  3. Choose how you get paid: weekly direct deposit, or the free auto-payouts on the Shopper Rewards Card described on Instacart's earnings page.
  4. Start a mileage log from your first batch, using the IRS rules on car expenses.
  5. Set aside money for self-employment tax and check whether estimated payments apply to you.
  6. After a few weeks, work out your real hourly rate with this earnings guide and decide whether to continue.
