Is Rakuten worth it for online shoppers?
Rakuten says joining is free and that brands, not members, pay it. Cash back arrives on four fixed dates a year, so how soon you need the money matters most.
Rakuten makes sense if
You shop online anyway and can wait for pay
You have friends who will make a purchase
Choose another platform if
You need cash within a couple of months
You want recourse if a referral bonus is denied
Rakuten commission rates
Rakuten says stores pay it a commission on a sale, Rakuten keeps a portion and shares the rest with you as cash back. Rakuten doesn't publish that split. Its help center says stores can set different rates by item category, so the rate on your item may differ from the headline rate, and taxes and shipping are never eligible. Rakuten's terms say rewards are earned on the net purchase amount, so fees and returns don't count either. Its privacy policy says offers and rates may be personalized, so another member may see a different rate. Rakuten's homepage says rates change daily across 3,500+ brands.

How and when Rakuten pays you
Cash back has to confirm before it can be paid, and Rakuten says the wait allows for returns and exchanges. Your confirmed balance has to be at least $5.01 to be paid; a smaller balance rolls over to the next quarter. Rakuten pays by PayPal, Bilt Points or check, and eligible American Express Card Members can take Membership Rewards points instead. For how other apps compare, see how side-hustle payouts work.

How to sign up for Rakuten

Linking a payment card is optional and only matters for in-store and restaurant cash back.

Rakuten Card referral annual cap
Rakuten's $4.6 billion figure is the total across all members since 1999, so it says nothing about what one member collects. The $5.85 on its homepage is an illustration that Rakuten says may vary. Rakuten doesn't publish average member earnings or savings, and no independent study with a stated sample measures typical Rakuten cash back.
Rakuten referral program
Rakuten's current offer is a $50 bonus for new sign-ups from Oct 1 to Dec 31, 2026. The person you refer must spend $50 within 90 days, and Rakuten says it may modify or cancel the offer at any time. Rakuten's referral terms (dated Oct 8, 2024) set these rules:
- The friend must be new and sign up through your link.
- Amazon.com purchases don't count, except Amazon Music.
- Self-referral, posting your link on pages you don't control and paid ads pointing to the link are restricted.
- Rakuten calls you an Influencer after 10 qualified referrals in a calendar quarter. The separate Sponsored Influencer program is by application at Rakuten's sole discretion.
Rakuten says your bonus is confirmed after the friend's cash back confirms, and is then added to your next cash back payment. Its pages give two timings: the referral FAQ says generally within 60 days of the friend's qualifying purchase, and the referral page says with the next cash back payment. Rakuten can deny a bonus if it judges the purchase fraudulent or abusive. The separate Rakuten Card referral pays $50 per approved referral, capped at $500 per calendar year, and isn't available in Washington State.
Rakuten payment schedule (quarterly payouts)
Rakuten's Big Fat Check schedule says each payment covers confirmed cash back from the prior quarter. The Feb 15 payment covers October to December, May 15 covers January to March, Aug 15 covers April to June, and Nov 15 covers July to September. The Nov 15, 2026 payment is for cash back earned July 1 to Sept 30. Rakuten's terms let it change the payment schedule at any time.
How to earn more on Rakuten
Rakuten says its cash back stacks with sales, credit card rewards and coupons, and that its extension applies eligible coupons automatically.
Can Rakuten close your account?
Yes. Rakuten's terms say it can rescind cash back, bar bonuses or close accounts it believes are abusing the service, and name referral abuse as a trigger. Each person is limited to one account, and accounts sharing identifying features may be flagged as fraudulent referrals. The referral terms say Rakuten may withhold or cancel bonuses and end accounts at its sole discretion, and that its decisions are final. Disputes go first through Member Services, then to individual binding arbitration with the American Arbitration Association, with a class action waiver. Small claims court is allowed, and the terms say the arbitration requirement doesn't stop government agencies from taking action. The terms also let Rakuten change them at any time, with continued use counting as acceptance.
An unused account costs money: after 12 months without a shopping trip, Rakuten's terms let it take $5.00 a month from your balance until it reaches zero. The fee can't make the balance negative.
Taxes on Rakuten income
Rakuten's terms say referral bonuses may be taxable and that you're solely responsible for the taxes. They don't promise a tax form. Its privacy policy says Rakuten collects tax information from sweepstakes, contest and promotion winners, and says nothing about 1099s for cash back or referrals. Whether or not a form arrives, see taxes on side income for what you owe.
Rakuten vs other cash back apps
Rakuten pays on a fixed quarterly calendar. For apps that pay rewards as cash, gift cards or coins once you reach each app's own minimum balance, see cashback and receipt apps.

Rakuten questions
Rakuten says eligible American Express Card Members can take their payout as Membership Rewards points instead of cash. Rakuten also says its cash back stacks with credit card rewards, so the card you pay with can earn its own rewards on the same purchase.
You link a payment card, which Rakuten says is needed only for in-store and restaurant cash back. Rakuten says dining pays 5% at 22,000+ restaurants when you pay with a linked card, and that dining cash back confirms 3 to 5 days after you dine.
Rakuten's checklist says to activate before adding to cart, stay in the same tab, use only coupons listed on Rakuten, accept cookies, and disable ad blockers and VPNs. If you still believe you should have earned cash back, Rakuten says to submit its Missing Cash Back form. Rakuten separates a missing trip (no click-through recorded) from missing cash back (trip recorded but $0 or ineligible because of an exclusion, cancellation or return).
Rakuten's terms name Ebates Performance Marketing, Inc., doing business as Rakuten Rewards, as the operator of the U.S. cash back service, and Rakuten Group, Inc. of Tokyo, Japan as the parent company. The terms list 800 Concar Drive, Suite 175, San Mateo, California as the U.S. legal address for arbitration notices.
