How to convert salary to hourly pay
To convert an annual salary to an hourly rate, divide your annual gross pay by the hours you work in a year. A standard 40-hour week over 52 weeks is 2,080 hours, so a $60,000 salary is about $28.85 an hour before taxes.
- Enter your pay and how often it's quoted: yearly, monthly, semi-monthly, biweekly or weekly.
- Set your usual hours per week. Open the work schedule settings if you want to compare fewer working weeks.
- Read your hourly equivalent, along with what the same pay comes to each month, every two weeks and each week.
Gross pay is what you earn before taxes and deductions. The Bureau of Labor Statistics counts overtime, bonuses and commissions in gross earnings too. This calculator converts your base pay only, so add those yourself if they're a regular part of what you earn.
Salary to hourly formula
Hourly equivalent = annual gross salary ÷ (hours per week × weeks per year).
For $60,000 at 40 hours a week: $60,000 ÷ (40 × 52) = $60,000 ÷ 2,080 = about $28.85 an hour. If you're paid monthly, multiply by 12 first: $5,000 a month × 12 = $60,000, which is the same $28.85 an hour.
The formula
Annual gross pay
Pay per period × pay periods a year (12 monthly, 24 semi-monthly, 26 biweekly, 52 weekly)
Hours worked in a year
Hours per week × weeks you actually work
Hourly equivalent
Annual gross pay ÷ hours worked in a year
Hourly to salary (reverse)
Hourly rate × hours per week × paid weeks a year
What it assumes
- Pay is gross, before taxes, withholding and deductions.
- A year has 52 weeks, 26 biweekly periods, 24 semi-monthly periods and 12 months.
- 2,080 hours is a convention for 40 hours over 52 weeks, not a rule for every job.
- Paycheck equivalents always use the full year, so changing the weeks you work changes only the hourly figure.
What it doesn't include
- Income tax, payroll tax and other withholding
- Benefits such as health insurance or retirement contributions
- Bonuses, commissions and tips
- Overtime eligibility or overtime pay
- Unpaid breaks or time you aren't paid for
Worked example
$60,000 a year, 40 hours a week, 52 weeks
- Hours in a year (40 × 52)
- 2,080
- Monthly ($60,000 ÷ 12)
- $5,000.00
- Biweekly ($60,000 ÷ 26)
- $2,307.69
- Hourly equivalent ($60,000 ÷ 2,080)
- $28.85
The reverse works the same way. Hourly rate × hours per week × paid weeks a year gives annual pay, so $25 an hour × 40 hours × 52 weeks = $52,000.
The 2,080 figure is a convention for comparing full-time jobs, not a number every employer uses. A 37.5-hour week over 52 weeks is 1,950 hours, which makes the same $60,000 salary about $30.77 an hour.

Paid time off, unpaid leave and hours actually worked
A salary usually covers the whole year, including paid vacation and holidays. That's why the paycheck figures always use all 52 weeks: two weeks off with pay doesn't change what you're paid.
Your pay per hour actually worked is a different number. If you work 48 weeks of the year and take 4 weeks of paid leave, the same $60,000 comes to about $31.25 for each hour you work, while your monthly pay stays $5,000. Lower Weeks you actually work in the work schedule settings to see this.
Hours per week matter even more. Two jobs that both pay $60,000 aren't equal if one expects 40 hours a week and the other expects 50:
- 40 hours a week: about $28.85 an hour
- 45 hours a week: about $25.64 an hour
- 50 hours a week: about $23.08 an hour
This compares pay per hour for a fixed salary. It doesn't work out overtime; for that, use the overtime pay calculator. Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, employees who aren't exempt must get at least time and a half for hours over 40 in a workweek, according to the Department of Labor, and many salaried roles are exempt. Check your offer or ask your employer how your hours are treated.
Hourly pay works the other way around. If you're paid by the hour, unpaid weeks off are weeks without pay, so in Hourly to salary mode, fewer paid weeks lower your annual total: $25 an hour for 48 paid weeks is $48,000 instead of $52,000. If you work for yourself or on gig apps, costs and unpaid time between jobs matter too. See how to calculate your real hourly rate.
Biweekly vs. semi-monthly pay
These two pay schedules sound alike but give different paychecks.
- Biweekly means every two weeks, or 26 paychecks a year. On a $60,000 salary, each one is about $2,307.69 before taxes.
- Semi-monthly means twice a month, often on the 15th and the last day, or 24 paychecks a year. On the same salary, each one is $2,500.00.
The yearly total is the same; it's split into a different number of checks. With biweekly pay, most years have two months with three paydays. Your actual paychecks will be lower than these figures once taxes and deductions come out, and they can vary with your employer's payroll calendar.
Frequently asked questions
About $24.04 an hour before taxes, at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks ($50,000 ÷ 2,080 hours). At 45 hours a week it works out to about $21.37.
About $28.85 an hour before taxes, at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks ($60,000 ÷ 2,080 hours). That's $5,000 a month or $2,307.69 every two weeks.
Use 52 to match how salaries and paychecks are normally quoted, since paid vacation is still paid. Use fewer weeks, like 48 or 50, when you want your pay per hour actually worked. A $60,000 salary over 48 working weeks at 40 hours is about $31.25 per hour worked, while each paycheck stays the same.
Before. Every figure is gross pay, before income tax, payroll tax and deductions like health insurance or retirement contributions. Your take-home pay will be lower. If you also earn on the side, see how taxes on side income work.
Yes. Switch the calculator to Hourly to salary and enter your rate, hours per week and paid weeks a year. $25 an hour at 40 hours for 52 paid weeks is $52,000 a year; with 48 paid weeks it's $48,000.
