Is Rev worth it for freelance transcribers?
Rev pays freelance transcriptionists, captioners and subtitle translators per audio or video minute, and applicants currently join a waitlist before they can work.
Rev makes sense if
You want to work without invoicing or startup costs
You want to choose your own hours
Choose another platform if
You need to start earning soon
You can't or won't use PayPal
You need a 1099 from the platform
You can't risk losing access with no appeal
How and when Rev pays you
Rev pays through PayPal only. It doesn't publish a minimum payout.

- Tax forms
Rev says PayPal should provide any tax paperwork you need.
Freelancers are independent contractors who handle their own taxes.
How to sign up for Rev
Rev's freelancer page says it has a waitlist because of high application volume, and that you can still apply. You pick one of its roles (transcriptionist, captioner, subtitle translator or legal transcriptionist), take a skills assessment and submit a work sample. Rev says it emails you once a decision is made.

How much you can make on Rev
Rev publishes a pay range per audio or video minute for each role. Rev says earnings depend on the role, the complexity of the project and how many minutes you complete.

Skilled transcriptionists' hourly pay (Nov 2019 claim)
These are Rev's own claims, and a per-minute rate isn't a monthly or hourly income. The hourly figure comes from a Nov 2019 post by Rev's founder, so it is more than a year old, and it describes skilled typists only. Rev doesn't publish a current average hourly or monthly pay for freelancers, or how many projects are available at each rate. To turn a per-minute rate into pay for your time, see how to calculate your hourly earnings.
Can Rev deactivate your account?
Rev's Services Agreement, last revised Sep 12, 2023, lets Rev close your account at any time for any reason. Rev's help center lists quality, being under 18 and failing its location and ID requirements as common reasons, and says a deactivation in one service line doesn't affect your standing in another. Deactivated freelancers can still log in to see their earnings and project history.
Rev's help center says it won't respond to inquiries about deactivated accounts. For general steps after a lockout, see how to appeal a gig app deactivation.
Separately, Rev's notice effective Mar 31, 2026 says an account with no submitted project for over a year is temporarily frozen. The same notice says Rev's standard transcription, captions and subtitles marketplaces were fully supplied and it was not unlocking those accounts, and that it was actively recruiting for legal transcription.
Is Rev legit?
Rev's Services Agreement names Rev.com, Incorporated as the company freelancers contract with. It treats freelancers as independent contractors, requires binding arbitration, and waives class and collective actions. Rev's own blog also records a 2019 pay restructuring.

Taxes on Rev income
Rev's help center says freelancers are independent contractors and Rev doesn't withhold taxes. It also says Rev doesn't send 1099-MISC forms because it pays through PayPal, and points freelancers to PayPal for any tax paperwork. Rev says it can't give tax advice.
The IRS says you must report gig economy income on a tax return even when no information return, such as a 1099-K or 1099-MISC, reports it. See taxes on side income.
Rev vs other online work platforms
Rev pays per media minute for transcription and captioning. Compare how pay, payouts and sign-up work on each platform.
Rev questions
Rev's help center says its automated Revver Chat is available 24/7 and forwards unanswered questions to Revver Support, which replies by email. You can also submit a support ticket and check its status under My Activities.
Rev's help center says freelancers must be physically located in, and hold official identification from, one of its approved locations. It links a list of those locations inside its help center.
Rev's page says you can apply for the role that best matches your skills and that you may have chances to expand if you qualify for additional roles. Applying more than once won't speed up a decision.
